After Luke Hughes’ draft to the New Jersey Devils back in 2021 where he joined his older brother Jack Hughes, both jerseys 43 and 86 showcase the Hughes name for the team.
Miles away from the two brothers, back in Vancouver, the eldest Hughes, Quinn, plays for the Vancouver Canucks.
On December 5, 2023, the Devils went to Vancouver to verse the Canucks. In a long-anticipated brother vs brother game, the Devils were the first to get points on the board with a goal from Jesper Bratt. The Canucks shortly tied the game with an advantage of 5 against 3 on the ice as a result of Devil’s Micheal McLeod being without a stick. In a split-second moment of pressure, J.T. Miller seized the opportunity with a goal for the Canucks.
The Devils left the 1st period with a 4-2 score after additional goals from Erik Haula, Jack Hughes, and McLeod. With less than 60 seconds left of the period, Dakota Joshua from the Canucks finished the period with the team’s second goal.
The only scorer from the 2nd period was Luke Hughes during a Devils power play. Working with his brother Jack, the power play goal once again led the Devils into the next period with a significant lead.
The final period brought a minor comeback for the Canucks with goals from Brock Boeser, Sam Lafferty, and Nils Höglander, however, it was not enough.
A tied game, 5-5, and 35 seconds left of the period, Jesper Bratt scored his second goal that night, starting the game and ending the game for the Devils in Vancouver.
Although Quinn did not score, he had notable saves and 2 assists on the ice throughout the game.
The sentimental and competitive emotions between the brothers made for an interesting night. Parents, Jim and Ellen Hughes were in attendance, and leading up to the game, many posted throwback pictures of the three onto social media.
What started off as three brothers growing up and playing hockey together turned into three prominent NHL athletes on the ice.
