“Glorious Purpose” The Ranking of Marvel Series on Disney+
This article is part of the entertainment column “The Daily Bugle” Opinionated review and ranking of all of the Marvel series currently on Disney+. Since January 2021 there has been a total of eight original Marvel series (plus one special presentation) on Disney+. Though there are mixed reviews for each series, how would Val Kohan (long time Marvel fan) rank them??
October 31, 2022
Starting in January 2021, the entire Marvel formula shifted with the two episode premiere of WandaVision, which was the very first Marvel Studios project that was not in the form of a theatrical film release. The success and praise for this sitcom-like series paved the way for the rest of the Marvel series on Disney+. Since then there have been eight more series including The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (March 2021), Loki (June 2021), What If…? (August 2021), Hawkeye (November 2021), Moon Knight (March 2022), Ms. Marvel (July 2021), She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (August 2022), and Werewolf By Night (October 2022). In this article I, Val Kohan (Marvel extraordinaire), will be ranking each series as per my opinion throughout watching the series during its weekly release. Please note that this is an opinionated piece and consists of my [Val Kohan’s] opinions in which I will thoroughly explain my reasoning and ranking. Some of my reasoning will also include comic knowledge comparing the MCU characters to their comic counterparts. Ranking will also be based off of the overall plot and theme of the series, the writing and cinematography, and of course the characters and arc throughout the mini-series. I will include what I thought were the best scenes from the series’ and what episode stood out to me the most out of the entire series.
1/9 Moon Knight-
Overview: Moon Knight starring Oscar Isaac (Marc Spector/Moon Knight/Steven Grant/Mr. Knight/Jake Lockley), Ethan Hawke (Arthur Harrow), and May Calamawy (Layla El-Faouly) was a six episode series. This was my most anticipated Marvel project of 2022 and highly anticipated Disney+ series of them all. And let me just say, I was not disappointed whatsoever. This entire series was so trippy and had viewers second guess everything which truly expressed Marc/Steven’s everyday life. The series was so true to the comics between the cinematography and the daily struggle with Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). The show would be nothing if it weren’t for Marc/Steven’s tragic character arc. Marc Spector/Steven Grant were perfectly portrayed in the series thanks to Oscar Isaac by showing their struggles of their daily life (and sleepless nights). As trippy as a character Moon Knight is, the show portrayed him to a tee. It could have been confusing to some, but not me, because he is a lesser known character that came into the (moon) light. Before anything I would like to thank Marvel so much for the excessive use of old songs that just work perfectly. First off with “A Man Without Love”, which I absolutely love. This song resonates with the characters so much, it feels so right for Steven because every day he wakes up disoriented and confused. “Every day I wake up, then I start to break up.” I believe that the lyrics describe how lonely Steven is. The ending of Moon Knight was perfect as well. Steven wakes up in his flat in London to “A Man Without Love” which is a full circle moment and once again makes fans wonder what was real and what wasn’t… Moon Knight perfectly showed Steven’s Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) through mirror imagery specifically showing double shots through puddles, reflections, or just mirroring a scene completely. Which perfectly symbolizes Steven and Marc’s double life and two sided stories. The cinematography hints at Steven’s multiple personalities through mirror imagery. A perfect example is when Steven is getting ready for his date (in episode one), he is looking into one mirror which turns into three to show his personality split. “You look like a knob.” I’d argue that Moon Knight is the most tragic Marvel character in a while because it’s literally about “The Man Who’s Mind Snapped”.
Best Scene(s): One of the best scenes in Moon Knight was in episode two, “Summon the Suit”, specifically the ending. Like most of Moon Knight, the ending of episode two was quite upsetting, and by upsetting I mean I cried… “So this is what it’s like. Being on the inside?” “Yeah.” “It’s horrible.” “It’s alright. You’re alright.” “I feel like I can scarcely move.” “It’s all right, just breathe through it. It gets easier.” It’s the first time they show Marc in control but through Steven’s point of view. Steven hates being on the outside, being conscious while not in control. “I don’t want it. Can I have my body back?” Steven gets defensive with Marc. “I can’t go on a date. I can barely keep a goldfish alive. I lost my job. It’s been you. It’s always been you, eating away parts of my life like a parasite.” Marc then gets so angry he stomps on the glass structure Steven’s reflection is in. The moment the clock strikes, Khonshu appears, Marc asks, “Where are we going?” “Where the hell do you think?” As Khonshu walks away the screen fills with his white wraps, quickly changing to a shot of a drape falling from a broken mirror with Steven scarcely sitting still. Peering to a shot of Marc drunk on the floor, walking up to curtains opening to Egypt.
Top Episode: As much as I love and adored each episode of Moon Knight, my favorite episode was probably episode five, “Asylum”, which was arguably the most depressing one of the entire series. Marc and Steven find themselves looking at their past while trying to return to the real world. It has one of the most heart-wrenching, dark, and tragic backstories in the entire MCU. The entire episode has viewers crying but the ending will shock you just as much. In this episode we find out that when Marc was younger, his brother drowned on his watch which caused tension between him and his mother resulting in her becoming abusive, violent, and resentful towards him. This made his home life difficult to say the least which originated his alternate personalities. Marc’s traumatic past led to the creation of his split personality of Steven. “You do not need to see that. That’s the whole point of you.” This whole episode pulls at your heartstrings even when Steven learns the truth. “…you made me up??” Another heartbreaking moment in this episode is when Dr. Harrow brings up that Marc/Steven’s mother died. Steven reacts very aggressively to this heavy news since viewers saw him leave countless voicemail messages to his mother in the first episode as well as hanging up the postcards she supposedly sent him. “Oh. Don’t say that. That’s not true. That’s not true. You having a laugh as well? I don’t wanna hear it… My mother is alive. You say that again, I will freak out! I promise.” Dr. Harrow then proceeds to call Steven’s mother. Steven is very prominent in not ringing his mother. “No, don’t do that. Don’t bother her. She screens her calls. She won’t answer. She’s afraid of tele salespeople. Don’t do that. Please don’t do that. Don’t bother her please.” Reality finally sets in for Steven when Harrow asks if he would like to talk to his mum. “My mum… (softly) my mum is dead.” Steven then hands over the phone and all that can be heard is static. Episode five ended with Steven heartbreakingly falling off the boat, not making it into the Field of Reeds, turning to sand, and sadly dying. “Keep coming! Stop the boat! Steven! No, no, no! Steven!” Which I still haven’t recovered from. The second Steven turns to stone, the scales balance leaving Marc in the Field of Reeds. The episode ends with Marc in a peaceful field to “Mas Alla Del Sol”. In order for the scales to balance Marc needed to get rid of one of the things that dragged him down which was Steven. “Laters, Gators!!”
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 86% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 89%, overall I would give it a 9.9 out of 10. Please note I do not agree with the Rotten Tomatoes’ score and do not base my personal out view of the show on critics’ scores. The only reason why I gave Moon Knight .1 points off is because I would have liked to see more of Jake Lockley but did enjoy the ending with Jake since it leaves so much open for maybe another season and to bring the characters into future MCU projects (which I think we definitely need a Midnight Suns soon).
2/9 Werewolf By Night–
Overview: Does this Special Presentation even count?? Maybe. Maybe not. But it was a Disney+ original hence why it is on this list (plus why it is ranked so highly). Werewolf By Night starring Gael García Bernal (Jack Russell/Werewolf by Night), Laura Donnelly (Elsa Bloodstone), and Carey Jones (Ted/Man-Thing) was the first special presentation released by Marvel Studios, which was an hour-long Halloween special. Werewolf By Night was one of my most anticipated Marvel projects of 2022. Though not much was released about the special before the initial release besides one trailer and a teaser poster, the mystery of course intrigued me more to this project than previous or even upcoming Marvel projects. For Marvel not to rely on the marketing for this project differed from other Marvel Studio productions. That is just one of the many reasons Werewolf By Night is so different from other Marvel projects and will probably stay that way. They primarily utilized practical effects while creating the Werewolf by Night himself, meaning the make-up for Jack Russell’s monstrous counterpart is all practical. This is completely new for Marvel since they heavily rely on CGI and VFX for most projects. As a Marvel fan I never minded CGI until more recently but have always enjoyed practical effects more even though it looked a lot different (some would say worse), the restraints it put on production. But I must say practical effects just bring something more to a project than CGI or VFX will ever do and that truly shows in Werewolf By Night. The entire special paid homage to classic horror like The Twilight Zone and of course the Universal Monster movies most notably The Wolf Man. Werewolf By Night truly brought the horror style the special, especially it being released in black and white for the true spirit of the story of Werewolf by Night. Saying it is a “complete love letter” to classic horror. Round of applause to Michael Giacchino who completely knocked it out of the park. Between the emotion from the characters, the storyline, and especially the cinematography. But I think we must all praise him on, of course, the score for the film, which ultimately gave me chills and reminded me so much of those classic horror movies, especially those high pitch violins. I would love for Marvel to do this more often and have more composer direct projects with how extraordinary Werewolf By Night turned out to be. I had high expectations from the beginning, the moment they announced this project but Michael Giacchino exceeded all of them. Something that really drew me to this project other than my love for the comics was the star of the special, Gael García Bernal. We have seen Gael García Bernal in enough movies and projects to know he is a brilliant actor. He’s even one of the greatest Disney characters of all time as he voiced Héctor Rivera in the 2017 film, Coco. It only did make sense for him to be Werewolf by Night. Something this special did so perfectly was that it was all in black and white and the only pop of color was the red bloodstone.
Best Scene(s): The most perfect moment from the entire special and my personal favorite moment was the ending. The ending of Werewolf By Night is absolutely beautiful to say the least. It is emotionally pleasing. Once Jack takes refuge under a tree to wait out his transformation. Elsa wins the competition and claims the bloodstone as her own, which is rightfully so. As Elsa rests from her adventurous night, the black and white visuals slowly turn to color to Judy Garland’s rendition of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”. This of course pays homage to The Wizard of Oz. Once Jack wakes up he finds that Ted has been watching over him and taking care of him. The two friends joke as they safely relax and even promise that he’d bring him to sushi. The camera slowly pans into the sky while “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” continues to play as the screen reads “The End”.
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the special presentation 91% certifying it as fresh and fasn gave it an 90%, overall I would give it a 9.8 out of 10. Please note I do not agree with the Rotten Tomatoes’ score and do not base my personal outview of the show on critics’ scores. Werewolf By Night may have been one of the most perfect Marvel projects that has been released. It had the perfect balance of action sequences and an initial storyline that introduced such obscure comic characters. Between the emotion from the characters, the storyline, and especially the cinematography. I don’t have any critiques with this special especially it being released in a new form never before seen with Marvel Studios. This was Marvel’s first Special Presentation and for Werewolf By Night to follow none of the Marvel formula was such a gamble but definitely worth it in the long run. Between being an hour long Halloween special, being completely in black and white (until the very end of course), and using almost primarily utilizing practical effects while creating the Werewolf by Night himself, I don’t think Marvel will ever have a project as special, different, and unique as Werewolf By Night. I would have loved to see more of Werewolf by Night himself but we have to understand that this special paid homage to classic horror which heavily relied on suspense and paranoia rather than seeing the actual “monster”.
3/9 Hawkeye–
Overview: Hawkeye starring Jeremy Renner (Clint Barton/Hawkeye/Ronin), Hailee Steinfeld (Kate Bishop), and Florence Pugh (Yelena Belova) was a six episode series. It has been years since fans have been wanting Clint Barton/Hawkeye to “team-up” with amateur acher, Kate Bishop. For years, fans have been fancasting Hailee Steinfeld as Kate and funny enough Kevin Feige (President of Marvel Studios) she never actually auditioned for the role because everyone working on the show had the feeling she would be great and she was beyond amazing in Hawkeye. She perfectly embodies who Kate Bishop is. Hawkeye follows Clint Barton and Kate Bishop who are forced to team-up when Clint’s vigilante past of being the Ronin, catches up to him while Kate deals with her own traumatic past and possible future. They soon become mixed-up in each other’s drama when their threats seem to merge and find themselves as targets for one of New York’s biggest crime lords, Wilson Fisk AKA The Kingpin. This festive six-episode miniseries was released just in time for the holiday season since the plot revolves around Clint trying to get home to his kids for Christmas. Hawkeye was one of my favorite series just because it was one of the first festive Marvel projects that can be watched for years to come as a classic holiday special. At last, finally bringing the spotlight to the most underrated Avenger, Hawkeye. Hawkeye has been one of my favorite Marvel characters since Thor. Some may say Clint is the worst or the weakest original Avenger… But I think he’s pretty cool even for an underdog. He’s literally just an archer, no traumatizing backstory, or powers, except that he never misses. I was in complete shock when Marvel brought the Kingpin from Netflix’s DareDevil into the MCU because Vincent D’Onofrio fit the role of Wilson Fisk perfectly.
Best Scene(s): Though Hawkeye is not particularly everyone’s favorite Avengers, they specifically go into his emotional turmoil in this series between his years as Ronin and losing his best friend, Natasha (both explored in Avengers: Endgame). “Yelena Missed Five Years With Her Sister” and “Clint Who Wishes He Could Give That Time Back”. There is one specific scene in episode four of Hawkeye that not only explains some of Clint’s past but the beginning of his and Nat’s friendship. Kate asks Clint, “Best shot you ever took?” He replies, “Uh, the one I didn’t take…” Clint then explains the mission he was on where he was supposed to take out Natasha. “It’s… about the time I met someone. I was sent to take her out. And when I got there, when it was time… I couldn’t do it. I just had this feeling she wanted out. Turns out I was right.” “You mean, Natasha.” A fan favorite out of the new additions in the MCU in Phase Four has been Yelena Belova. Even though she has only been in two projects she has become one of the most popular Marvel characters probably because of the way Florence Pugh plays the charismatic yet violent Widow. One of the best scenes in Hawkeye with Yelena was when she broke into Kate’s house. “You’re probably thinking, ‘What this is crazy. I’m going to have dinner with the enemy? And she made some really good smelling macaroni.’” The best scene out of them all had to be the ending of episode five, “Ronin”. I got chills at the end… Revealing one of the biggest, well-known Marvel villains will do it. But right when Clint says “Kingpin”, “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” starts to play which fits both the holiday theme of Hawkeye and Kingpin being the worst crime lord of them all. Also, the closing credits have Kingpin’s silhouette starring over the city skylight with both Kate and Clint’s silhouettes in it which also just perfectly expresses the character of Kingpin.
Top Episode: I don’t think I could choose a favorite episode but a contender has to be the finale, “So This Is Christmas?” Just by the title of the episode itself being named after John Lennon’s “Happy Christmas (War Is Over)”.
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 92% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 89%, overall I would give it a 9.0 out of 10. Please note I do not agree with the Rotten Tomatoes’ score and do not base my personal outview of the show on critics’ scores. Like I have mentioned multiple times before, Hawkeye is not everyone’s favorite Avenger but he’s one of mine and for him to finally get the respect he deserved is everything. Even though all the other Avengers got full length films (Captain America and Iron Man getting two excellently made trilogies. Where Thor had four films which most fans would like to completely forget about). The entire series was just a nice festive show that got fans into the holiday spirit while Clint and Kate were trying to save Christmas from an absolute Scrooge, Kingpin. Also the series introduced Kate Bishop who is arguably the best addition to the MCU in Phase Four.
4/9 The Falcon and the Winter Soldier-
Overview: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or I should say Captain America and the Winter Soldier starring Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Falcon/Captain America), Sebastian Stan (James “Bucky” Barnes/The Winter Soldier/The White Wolf), and Daniel Brühl (Baron Zemo) was a six episode series. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier fit perfectly with the times we were living in at the time of the release. Sam and Bucky truly represent everyone. I expected a lot from The Falcon and the Winter Soldier before any of the shows were released but with WandaVision being such a hit, my expectations were raised. Let’s just say, they were all met and even exceeded what I initially thought the show would be. I never would have thought that Bucky and Sam would get their own series on Disney which is basically just six hours of ad libbed bickering between an angry old guy with one arm and an ex-military man with wings… But most secondary Marvel characters did get their own shows or will be. Props to Marvel for pulling off the comic accurate suits for both Captain America and Baron Zemo. Sam’s Captain America suit is one of the best page to screen costumes Marvel has ever produced. Where Zemo’s is just iconic, definitely fit for a Baron.
Best Scene(s): I was most excited for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier especially to see Sebastian Stan and with that, Bucky. Like how is he dealing with being a 106 year old man, Steve’s death, and not being an assassin anymore. One of the best parts was when Bucky discovered himself again, “I am no longer the Winter Soldier. I am James Bucky Barnes. And you’re part of my efforts to make amends [smiles].”
Zemo was one the best villains in the MCU, there’s no question about it. He’s my personal favorite villain and The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gave us everything and more with his character. By more I mean everything we’ve ever needed… Dancing Zemo, him teaming up with Bucky and Sam, but mainly dancing Zemo. That was the highlight of the series. Not only did Zemo prove he was one of the best villains (well anti-hero now?) while rocking his iconic red mask but more importantly showing off his dance movies at Sharon’s party!! Also why aren’t we talking about Suitkovia?!
The ending of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier brought closure to everyone. Bucky finally feeling comfortable in his own skin and bionic arm, Sam representing America, and finally having the end title say “Captain America and the Winter Soldier”… I truly cried. No lie. I’ve been waiting so long for Sam to become Captain America! Anthony Mackie will definitely be able to fill Chris Evans’ shoes or should I say boots?! Even though didn’t both Sam and Bucky change and progress throughout the series… Since Bucky isn’t the Winter Soldier anymore he is James Bucky Barnes since he’s made amends?? Shouldn’t it be called “Captain America and the White Wolf”??
Top Episode: The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had one of the best first episodes out of all the Disney+ Marvel series. “New World Order”, which really set up the rest of the series by showing where Bucky and Sam have been since the Blip and the events of Avengers: Endgame. Bucky and Sam have gone their separate ways dealing with their own trauma and the loss of Steve. Sam handed the over shield to a museum, Bucky is trying to cope with his PTSD from the world’s best assassin, all while dealing with a terrorist group, The Flag Smashers. Who were trying to bring back what it was like during the blip, which neither Bucky nor Sam were around to witness. Bucky was getting into dating again and trying to make amends with everyone he hurt or been wronged by while being the Winter Soldier. Out of all of the Disney+ Marvel show premieres, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was the best but also the “worst” based on the ending, if that makes sense. It ends with Sam’s sister, Sarah, turning on the news. The government announced that the world needs a new hero as they give Steve’s shield to John Walker, the new Captain America. It ends with John Walker in full Captain America gear walking out to a crowd grabbing the shield and just smiling into the camera. Many fans joked that John Walker looked like Carl Fredicksen from UP in the “Captain America” suit (Note that Captain America is in quotes because we all know John Walker was never and will never be Captain America). Above I said The Falcon and the Winter Soldier had the best yet worst series premiere because “New World Order” is perfect to say the least which fans just raved about in which they barley talked about because they were too enraged by John Walker. Fans absolutely hate him… which means Marvel and Wyatt Russell did their jobs. In Captain America: The First Avenger, Dr. Erskine says, “The serum amplifies everything inside. So good becomes great. Bad becomes worse…” To begin, John didn’t have the best qualities and morals like Steve had. Steve was a believer and a good man before he was a hero, where John is just a soldier. Connecting what John did to what Dr. Erskine said John was bad and became worse due to the serum. One thing that made me hate him the most was when he said that Steve was like a brother to him in episode two. Bucky’s reaction to what he said was heartbreaking and absolutely hurt me…
But my personal favorite episode was “Power Broker” (episode three) for one reason and one reason only… Baron Zemo’s return. I would argue that Sam, Bucky, and Zemo are one of the best trios in the MCU. This episode had everything, Bucky breaking Zemo out of prison, Bucky and Sam teaming up with Zemo all while disguising Sam as a pimp, Zemo dancing, and even Sharon Carter showing up. “I stole Steve’s shield, remember? I also took the wings for your ass so that you could save his ass from his ass.”
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 84% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 82%, overall I would give it a 9.2 out of 10. Please note I do not agree with the Rotten Tomatoes’ score and do not base my personal outview of the show on critics’ scores. My only quirrel with the show was the ending title of “Captain America and the Winter Soldier”. It should have read, “Captain America and the White Wolf”, because Bucky is no longer the Winter Soldier, he is James Bucky Barnes. The entire series showed his progression and how far he’s come since we first saw the brain washed machine rather than the human and man Bucky truly was. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier was about “The Man Able to Put His Mind Back Together”. But I must say The Falcon and the Winter Soldier did something no other series did and that was to welcome a new Captain America to the MCU.
5/9 Loki-
Overview: Loki starring Tom Hiddleston (Loki Odinson), Sophia Di Martino (Sylvie), Owen Wilson (Mobius M. Mobius), and Johnathan Majors (He Who Remains/Kang the Conqueror) was a six episode series. The most anticipated Dinsey+ (Marvel) series for most fans to date was, in fact, Loki. Disney+ even changed its lineup for weekly releases due to the popularity of Loki. Instead of the normal scheduling of new content released on Fridays, everything now is released on Wednesdays which first started in June of 2021. At first it started out because Loki doesn’t conform to the masses and neither should his series. Loki is the first Marvel Disney+ series to officially release a season two coming out roughly in 2023. Loki may have been the most pivotal series of all of the Disney+ Marvel ones. It was the first show to bring in the variant storyline which would also be followed in some of the other major Marvel projects including Spider-Man: No Way Home (which was my absolute favorite Phase Four project cinematic or Disney+), Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and What If…? Loki had so many different likable variants with Sylvie, Classic Loki, Kid Loki, Boastful Loki, President Loki, and even an alligator version called Alligator Loki. Not only did Loki open the multiverse but it introduced Jonathan Majors to the MCU as the next big villain of the next couple Marvel phases as Kang the Conqueror. To be completely honest Loki was just setting up the beginning of the end really. I mean the multiverse is going to be… a lot and add Kang into that jumble… Fans need to be prepared for anything.
Loki Variant Debate: One of the biggest debates coming out of the Loki series was who is everyone’s favorite Loki variant?? We have 2012 Loki (Tom Hiddleston), Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino), Classic Loki (Richard E. Grant), Boastful Loki (Deobia Oparei), Kid Loki (Jack Veal), President Loki (also played by Tom Hiddleston), and even Alligator Loki. My personal favorite had to be Classic Loki but Boastful Loki and Kid Loki are tied for second. First things first, having Classic Loki played by such an unbelievable actor like Richard E. Grant for such a minor role was great to say the least. One of the best scenes in the entire series was when he made Asgard which was just a figment of your imagination which also resulted in his sacrifice. The moment we see his helmet hit the ground… I wouldn’t be able to call myself a Marvel fan if I didn’t bring up the fact that Classic Loki’s costume is taken directly from the comics which is a nod to Loki’s “classic” look from the pages. Richard E. Grant even called the costume channeling his inner Kermit the Frog. I think we all need to appreciate all of the Loki variant’s Nexus Events which are very heavy. Classic Loki escaped Thanos’ wrath at the beginning of Avengers: Infinity War. As seen in Infinity War instead of trying to kill the Mad Titan himself with his dagger, Classic Loki was able to create such a believable projection of himself that felt so real he faked his own death. Not only was he able to escape Thanos but death itself. In order to keep this up he stayed in hiding and realized that pain just followed him. But after years and years of isolation, Classic Loki was lonely and missed Thor so dearly. But the second he stepped out of hiding the TVA caught up with him.
When asked what his Nexus Event was, Kid Loki bluntly replied, “I killed Thor.” He never went into specifics but it’s pretty impressive that Kid Loki was able to kill Thor at such a young age where the Loki we know and have seen since the first Thor movie has been trying to kill him since 2011. The killing of the God of Thunder was why Kid Loki was hunted by the TVA and eventually pruned.
Not only was Boastful Loki able to wield Mjolnir, which is probably just a makeshift one. He claimed he was able to vanquish both Captain America and Iron Man. Alligator, Classic, and Kid Loki also call his bluff when he later claims he got his hands on all six Infinity Stones.
So who is the most powerful Loki variant?? “You think what makes a Loki a Loki, is the fact that we’re destined to lose?” “We may lose, sometimes painfully, but we don’t die. We survive.”
Best Scene(s): The saddest part of the first episode is when 2012 Loki sees his future. Loki watching the TVA’s file of his life. Watching his mischievous ways from a different point of view including his redemption, the fall of Asgard, his multiple deaths, and his mother’s death which he ultimately caused, some may even say it was his unplanned plan. When he sees his final death, you know when Thanos snaps his neck and his eyes start to bleed, and the screen says, “end of file”, which just glows on his face… It’s a lot to, um, handle. Knowing this is 2012 Loki, so after just destroying New York trying to lead, well help, Thanos… He’s still that greasy villain who killed his mom, attempted to kill his father, and wanted his brother dead to take over the throne. For Loki to see all his wrong doings of things he hasn’t even done yet made him become who he was at the end of the season. Thankfully we’re getting a season two!!
One of the best quotes of the entire show, “Love is a dagger. It’s a weapon to be wielded far away or up close. You can see yourself in it. It’s beautiful until it makes you bleed. But ultimately, when you reach for it,” “It isn’t real.” Can Loki ever learn to love or is love a figment of his imagination like the dagger??
Out of anything from the Marvel series, Kang’s introduction was the best. He Who Remains from Loki is nothing compared to the Kang(s) we will be getting in future Marvel projects. He Who Remains was just so over everything and just this charismatic hermit. I mean he even told the audience, “If you think I am evil, wait until you meet my variants.” Can we all just take a moment and appreciate Jonathan Majors as the next baddie, Kang. Comparing the two major villains of the MCU, Kang and Thanos. Kang is much more likable due to his charisma.
Top Episode: My favorite episode was either “The Nexus Event” or “Journey Into Mystery” but probably “The Nexus Event” which was just a brillant episode. And that end credit scene was one of the best. The way they played “If You Love Me (Really Loved Me)” was such a Lokit thing to do, well played… It was the same episode where we not only met the four Loki variants but Mobius was also pruned. One question I would like answered is Mobius’ past… What about his jet ski?? “Yeah, wherever I had a life before the TVA came along. Maybe I had a jet ski. That’s what I’d like to do.”
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 92% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it a 90%, overall I would give it a 9.0 out of 10. Although Loki was a pretty solid series by itself, introducing Jonathan Majors as He Who Remains but will ultimately be Kang made it so highly on my ranking. I’m sure we’ll see our fair share of Kang and his variants in most of the upcoming Marvel projects as he is going to be the new Thanos. But more likable and more violent… So better than Thanos. I’m actually rooting for Kang because Jonathan Majors played him with such charisma to be so likable. He was revealed as the man behind the curtain or just the man who revealed he has planned everything that has ever happened in the Infinity Saga, even scripted the story (meaning everything that has happened in any Marvel movie or project since 2008 was all part of his so-called plan). He Who Remains was just the start of Kang’s Dynasty, he even stated in Loki, “I’ll see you soon.” Having Marvel’s next big baddie be revealed in one of the Disney+ series is huge for multiple reasons but just goes to show that they will not shy away from using their platforms to develop such stories. Jonathan Majors hit it out of the park to say the least… Blew past even my highest of expectations for Kang.
6/9 WandaVision-
Overview: WandaVision starring Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch), Paul Bettany (Vision), and Kathryn Hahn (Agnes/Agatha Harkness) was a nine episode series. I think Marvel made the right decision by having WandaVision kick off the Marvel Disney+ series’ only because it set the tone for the rest of the shows and future projects. The trippy sitcom-like theme of the show was refreshing than the usual Marvel projects. There has never been a show before and even after WandaVision to do what the series did. Having each episode be in a different decade and era of television as well as having a nod to classic television shows through the decades like The Dick Van Dyke Show, I Love Lucy, Bewitched (especially this show due to the similarities of Wanda being a sorcerer), The Brady Bunch, Full House (it was without question that WandaVision would recall Full House due to Elizabeth Olsen’s connections), and Malcolm In the Middle, just to name a few. WandaVision showed the depth of the characters especially Wanda rather than constant action. It is a show about “A Witch Who Lost Everything”. Each episode shows a different stage of grief. Wanda is, at first, in denial, then moves to anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Though some fans would argue that Wanda has not properly accepted the fact that she was alone due to the end credit scene at the end of episode nine. The highlight from WandaVision had to be brought in Sony’s Quicksilver from the X-Men movies, first introduced in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but being nothing but a fake with Evan Peters MCU debut as Ralph Bohner. I must say bringing in Evan Peters with Marvel trying to pull a fast one on us fans revealing him being a complete fake really gave me Trevor Slattery vibes. I think we can all agree how brilliant of an actor Evan Peters is whether he plays a speedster or a cannibal.
Best Scene(s): One of the best scenes in WandaVision was in episode two, “Don’t Touch That Dial”, when it turned to color. “Is this really happening??” Having a sitcom starring two Avengers turn from black and white to color before your eyes was perfect to say the least. This scene perfectly shows what WandaVision was all about. It seemed like such a happy sitcom world but so much more was going on underneath the surface.
Top Episode: My favorite episode of WandaVision was without a doubt the 70s episode, episode three, “Now In Color”. My favorite part of the entire show happens in this episode. After Wanda has Billy and Tommy, Geralide (secretly Monica Rambeau) says, “Can you believe it? Twins!!” Wanda replies, “I’m a twin, I had a brother, his name was Pietro.” [Wanda starts to sing a Sokovian lullaby] Geraldine then asks, “He was killed by Ultron, wasn’t he?” This scene was not only shot perfectly but the writing was impeccable. The scene would go back and forth from Geraldine and Wanda’s conversation to Vision talking to Herb and Agnes. The neighbors gossip to Vision about Geraldine saying how she’s new to town, no family, no husband… Vision says, “Well, there’s nothing wrong with that.” Agnes replies, “No home…” This of course spooks Vision so he then checks on Wanda and the twins. To Vision’s surprise Geradine isn’t with Wanda… or anywhere to be found. He asks where she is. Wanda says she went home… Wanda says all this while staring at the twins, smiling… It’s terrifyingly good. The episode ends with Geraldine, or I should say Monica, getting yeeted through some force field in front of the Welcome to Westview “home is where you make it” sign with a bunch of SWORD helicopters surrounding her and spotlights on her. It ends with a zoom in on Monica’s face while “DayDream Believer” by the Monkees plays.
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 91% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 88%, overall I would give it a 8.5 out of 10.
7/9 What If…?-
Overview: What If…? with Jeffrey Wright as The Watcher was a nine episode animated series. What If…? is Marvel Studios’ first animated series to tie directly into the MCU. The animation is unlike something viewers have ever seen before. The Watcher (Jeffery Wright who is beyond perfect for the role) narrates each hand-drawn story that follows Marvel heroes in the alternate universe tying into the multiverse including stories following what if Peggy Carter took the super-soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers or what if Stephen Strange lost the one thing that defined his world, Christine Palmer? The whole series, season one so far, messes with the Infinity Saga, pondering the question, what if? For Marvel to question and make their fans ponder the last thirteen years of the MCU and to tie all of the overlapping stories together with the multiverse. To pull it off is impressive but we don’t question Marvel…
Best Scene(s): My favorite scene was from episode five, “What If… Zombies!?” was when Peter once again made a video documentary titled, “So You Wanna Survive the Zombie Apocalypse”. Viewers might have noticed that Peter spelled out “zombie apocalypse” with the children’s alphabet magnets for refrigerators… This video documentary was a nod to Peter’s other similar videos from Captain America: Civil War and the beginning of Spider-Man: Homecoming. In Peter’s video when he introduces what’s left of the Avengers, Happy “never actually happy” Hogan is wearing a shirt reading, “I’m not single, I’m saving myself for Thor”. Winter Soldier fans were very pleased after Marvel gave them a bit of a “steamy” moment with Bucky Barnes.
Top Episode: My favorite episode from What If…? had to be Episode Four, “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?”. I may be a bit biased since Doctor Strange is one of my favorite Marvel characters and I believe that Doctor Strange is one of thee best Marvel movies of them all. The beginning of Doctor Strange is perfect. All the scenes leading up to his accident and even after just show him being an arrogant fool and foreshadows everything. Like how the only doctor who could have done better on his hands was him, basically meaning the only person who could have saved him, was himself. “No one could have done better.” “I could have done better.” But that’s what exactly what he does by the end. Ugh, perfection! I don’t think the writing of both of the Doctor Strange movies is as appreciated as it should be. Just the foreshadowing and irony is spine chilling. “But you will suffer!” “Pain’s an old friend.” “What If… Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” follows the story of what if Stephen Strange lost the one thing that defined his world, Christine Palmer. Instead of coping with his grief and loss, he uses the Eye of Agamotto and powers from the Dark Dimension to change the past but messes with the universe. Fans have almost seen this side of Stephen live action in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness with Sinister Strange. I love how unstable Sinister Strange is. One moment he is so dischevialled when saying, “Are you happy, Stephen. It’s the question that… Christine Palmer asked me at her wedding.” But puts the charm on as soon as he says, “I said, ‘Yes of course I’m happy. I’m a sorcerer with the power of gods.’” Am I a bit saddened that Sinister Strange isn’t the one from What If…? Yes. But I still find it cool that Strange has a bit of a crisis since everything Sinister Strange is describing is how his life seems to be playing out. I mean Reed Richards, who isn’t the smartest man in universe 838, did say Stephen is the biggest threat in any universe due to how wreckless he is. “You ever had that dream where you’re falling as if you’ve been pushed off a tall building? That was probably me…”
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 94% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 93%, overall I would give it a 8.0 out of 10.
8/9 She-Hulk: Attorney At Law-
Overview: She-Hulk: Attorney At Law starring Tatiana Maslany (Jennifer Walters/She-Hulk) with cameos by Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/The Hulk), Benedict Wong (Sorcerer Supreme Wong), and Charlie Cox reprising his role as everyone’s favorite blind lawyer by day, Matt Murdock, and a vigilante superhero at night, DareDevil, was a nine episode series. “Don’t make me angry… You wouldn’t like me angry…” She-Hulk: Attorney At Law however made fans quite angry… Some even left highly disappointed by the entire series especially due to the plot lacking finale. I found the series to be enjoyable to an extent but was a bit taken aback by the CGI which was questionable, many cringy elements of the series (She-Hulk twerking with Megan Thee Stallion being one of them), the forced feminist agenda, and of course Jennifer Walter’s casually hooking up with Matt Murdock.
Best Scene(s): All the best scenes just include Matt Murdock from episode eight. Right when DareDevil was revealed (which wasn’t a surprise but it was the first official look at his new red and gold suit) “You need to back off.” While She-Hulk and DareDevil go at it, Jen has no idea that DareDevil is secretly Matt, which just makes the fight scene a hundred times better. “You made a mistake when you messed with my client! ‘Cause now I’m gonna whoop your ass.” “Huh. My ass remains unwhooped.”
Fans absolutely loved Jen and Matt’s chemistry. “Why didn’t you tell me that before we fought?” “Uh. Why didn’t you ask me before trying to whoop my ass?” Fans loved how Charlie Cox said this quote by the way. But I’m not really for the Jen and Matt relationship which may be a controversial opinion. I was always for Matt and Elektra in DareDevil and even Karen and Claire were better than Jen.
“There are 25 goons in the building. Seven below us, eight in the front, and 10 in the hallway.” “How do you know that?” “I can hear their heartbeats. I can hear yours, too. Your heart’s beating pretty fast.” “What? What? No, it’s not. I’m healthy.” Once again, the chemistry between Matt and Jen in this scene… Plus the way she looks at him. As much as I wasn’t a fan of this relationship, this scene was really good.
Can we all stop and appreciate yet another DareDevil hallway fight scene. DareDevil goes into the Lily Pad to beat up Eugene’s goons. I think we can all agree that hallway fight scenes are essential in any DareDevil projects. We all know the best hallway fight scene is The Defenders fight scene where Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Danny Rand fight off members of the Hand while DareDevil goes hand to hand with his ex-girlfriend, Elektra, who was supposedly dead.
At the end of the episode Matt tells Jen, “Hey, maybe next time I’m in town, I can take you out to dinner.” And Jen just says, “Yeah, or maybe we can skip all of that and just…” One thing leads to another and it’s easy to say that Jennifer and Matt are kind of a thing now. This “relationship/hook up” is dividing fans. Marvel gave us one of the most perfect shots of DareDevil doing the walk of shame and fans are all for this.
Top Episode: My favorite episode was episode eight, “Ribbit and Rip It”, which was the only decent one to be completely honest. For one reason and one reason only… Matt Murdock. Charlie Cox ultimately saved the series by being in one episode.
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 85% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 33%, overall I would give it a 4.0 out of 10. Which is quite gracious but only received that rating because of Matt Murdock which we can all agree initially saved this series even if he was only in one episode (and that episode being the second to last one) and cameoing in the finale as “the boyfriend”/”hookup”?!
9/9 Ms. Marvel-
Overview: Ms. Marvel starring Iman Vellani (Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel) and Matt Lintz (Bruno Carrelli) was a six episode series. I am just going to put it out there. I was not a fan of Ms. Marvel whatsoever. Mainly because I did not like the casting of Kamala Khan. Hence why it is last on my list of all the Marvel shows.
Best Scene(s): The best scene had to be from the Ms. Marvel had to be from the finale when Bruno was sent to be a distraction for Damage Control and then got thrown up on a window.
Rating/Review: Though critics (Rotten Tomatoes) gave the series 97% certifying it as fresh and fans gave it an 80%, overall I would give it a 3.0 out of 10. I was not a fan of Iman Vellani’s approach to the character or portrayal which I found very cringy and annoying at times. The best characters had to be Bruno, Aamir, and Yusuf due to their comedic timing.
All episodes of each series is now streaming on Disney+!!
