The Worst NFL Game Ever Played

Many NFL fans consider the game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Miami Dolphins on November 26, 2007 to be the worst NFL game to ever be played.

The 7-3 Pittsburgh Steelers, led by young quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, and the 0-10 Miami Dolphins, led by quarterback John Beck, battled on November 26, 2007 at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where there was huge rainfall that culminated in large amounts of mud. This game is often referred to as “The Mud Bowl”. The weather conditions made it impossible for both teams to score.

“You just knew it was going to be a 3-0 game, a 6-0 game.” Steelers linebacker Larry Foote said to the Associated Press.

For nearly the entire game, there was no scoring. Even Steelers kicker Jeff Reed missed a 45-yard field goal.

Dolphins punter Brandon Fields punted from the Dolphins goalline and came straight down, plunging several inches into the turf. This play was the most iconic from the game.

Surprisingly, an 0-10 Dolphins team held their own against a 7-3 Steelers team for almost 60 minutes. The Dolphins eventually gave up at the end of the game when the Steelers drove down the field while Roethlisberger had completions of 21,11, and 6 yards to wide receiver Hines Ward. Eventually, Jeff Reid redeemed himself with a 24-yard field goal with 17 seconds left in regulation.

To recap the game, the Dolphins had only 159 total yards of offense, while the Steelers had 216 yards.

Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter told Associated Press, “It was like being on the beach in the sand on every play”.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward said to the Associated Press, “Those conditions, whew, they were horrendous.”

The Steelers took on the Cincinnati Bengals the week after, and the Dolphins played the New York Jets.
