Hurricanes Defeat the Capitals in the 2023 Stadium Series

Raleigh, NC – The 2023 Navy Federal Credit Union NHL Stadium Series occurred this past weekend on February 18, 2023. It was hosted by the Carolina Hurricanes at Carter Finley Stadium, which is the home of the North Carolina State football, who played against the Washington Capitals.

The Hurricanes, going into the game, are currently first in the Metropolitan Division and second in the Eastern Conference with a record of 36-10-8 with 80 points. The Capitals stand at sixth place in the Metropolitan Division with a record of 28-24-6 with 62 points.

The Hurricanes became the 28th NHL team to play in an NHL regular-season outdoor game. 

The Capitals were playing in their fourth regular-season outdoor game. Going into it, Washington was 3-0-0 in their previous appearances outdoors including: 3-1 win against the Penguins in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic, 3-2 victory over the Blackhawks in the 2015 NHL Winter Classic, and a 5-2 triumph against the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2018 NHL Stadium Series. 

Carolina ultimately went on to defeat the Capitals with the score of 4-1. This win came from the help of Martin Nečas with one goal and two assists, Jesperi Kotkaniemi with a goal and assist, Teuvo Teräväinen with a goal and assist, and Paul Stastny with a goal. The Capitals only goal came from Tom Wilson with an assist by Sonny Milano.
