Fashion Predictions for the Spring and Summer of 2023

Predicting fashion is an easy task. All one must do is observe and analyze social, cultural, and impactful movements that will have a lasting or short effect on fashion. During my shopping adventures, I noticed recurring fashion styles and lifestyles popping up. And ones that are fading out.

This spring/summer has two main fashion categories coming up. The first one is now the late 90s and early 00s (the fashion style Gen Z has a chokehold on), which also focuses on more feminine styles and increases in diversity and ethnicity fashion. The second style is the minimalistic style (more directed toward the millennials), which focuses on essentials and

cluttered look.

Gen Z loves the 90’s style. But they are now mixing in the early 2000’s style. With the bright colors, layered tank tops, low-rise jeans, velvet sweatsuits, cropped tees, and fun colorful accessories such as belts, hair clips, and hats. Beyonce, Brittany Spears, Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, and Nicole Richie helped create this look, but now the main celebrities helping this look thrive are Ice Spice, Dua Lipa, Lizzo, Rihanna, Bella Hadid, and Emma Chamberlain.  Y2k has made a comeback in our lives because of Gen Z’s obsession with it. For us, the Y2K era is comforting. Gen Z is tired after the pandemic that disrupted their schooling and social lives, and one way we are coping with this is by going back to the ‘throwback’ economy.

While millennials lived through the hype of Y2K, their main interest is the minimalist lifestyle. The minimalist lifestyle is the idea of living with fewer possessions and focusing on the ones you need. The fashion sense is based on neutral colors such as browns, whites, tans, etc. Such things as plain t-shirts, polos, pants, and button-ups. The goal is to dress with intention and to fill your wardrobe with fewer clothes but ones that make you feel good about yourself. The minimalist style first debuted in the 50s, but the fashion did not emerge until the 80s. Some celebrities that are known for their minimalistic fashion sense are Leonardo DiCaprio, Sarah Jessica Bell, Kristen Bell, and Invar Kamprad. The style has become a fan favorite because of the way it simplifies our lives, reduces anxiety, and gives us time to focus on the real things that matter.
