Derek Jeter was the Yankees Shortstop from May 29, 1995 to his final game on September 28, 2014. Jeter was drafted by the New York Yankees as the 6th pick in the 1st round of the 1992 MLB June Amateur Draft from Central HS in Kalamazoo Michigan. Derek Jeter made his Major League debut on May 29, 1995 against the Seattle Mariners where he got 0 hits in 5 at bats. On May 30, 1995, Jeter hit a hard grounder for his first Major League hit and Jeter finished the season 12-for-48 at the plate. On opening day in 1996, Derek Jeter hit his first Major League home run off of Dennis Martinez of the Cleveland Indians, finishing the season with 10 home runs.
Derek Jeter picked up his first World Series Championship that season after the Yankees defeated the Atlanta Braves 4-2 and was awarded ¨Rookie Of The Year¨. In 1998, Jeter had 203 hits and won his second career World Series Championship after the Yankees swept the San Diego Padres. The Yankees swept the Atlanta Braves in the 1999 World Series for their second Championship within two years and third Championship in four years. The Yankees would once again go to the World Series in 2000 where they faced the New York Mets. Jeter batted .480 in the series with two home runs and nine hits. The Yankees Beat the Mets 4-1 and Jeter was named the 2000 World Series MVP. Derek Jeter had a good 2001 season, batting .311 with 21 home runs and making the All-Star team and coming in 10th place in the MVP voting. The Yankees went 95-65 winning the AL East. The Yankees went to the World Series for the fourth year in a row where they faced the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks defeated the Yankees in 7 games due to an error by Mariano Rivera in the 9th inning of game 7 when he threw the ball into the outfield allowing the winning winning run to score.
On June 3, 2003, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner named Derek Jeter the Captain of the New York Yankees. The Yankees went to the World Series in 2003 but lost 4-2 to the Miami Marlins. Jeter and the Yankees biggest embarrassment came in the 2004 ALCS Against the Boston Red Sox where the Yankees went up 3-0 in the series then lost the next 4 games sending the Red Sox to the World Series, a loss that sticks with Jeter to this day. The Yankees returned to the World Series in 2009 where they would be facing the defending champions, the Philadelphia Phillies. In 6 games the Yankees would defeat the Phillies to claim their 27th World Championship and Jeter’s 5th and final championship. On July 9, 2011, Derek Jeter recorded his 3000th career hit writing his name into the history books. Derek Jeter had one of his best seasons in 2012 batting .316 and leading the American League with 216 hits. Jeter only played 17 games in 2013 due to a leg injury he sustained in the 2012 playoffs. On February 17, 2014 Derek Jeter announced he would retire after the 2014 season. Jeter played his final game on September 28, 2014, going 1 for 2 with an RBI. Derek Jeter was officially inducted into the National Baseball Hall Of Fame in 2020 receiving 396/397 of the votes. Derek Jeter will always be remembered as a player who was always reliable and cared about the game.
