I have been a Barbie fan my whole life. I watched all the movies, had two dollhouses, and collected Barbie doll after Barbie doll. I was obsessed with her, but who wouldn’t be?
Barbie dominated by the time she hit the shelves. No one is able to say Barbie isn’t fashionable. How could they not, she’s Barbie! She represents everything women CAN be. She is strong, independent, and fashionable. She has every career imaginable. Veterinarian, astronaut, fashion model, baker/chef, ballerina, dancer, musician and more.
But did you know that she has a style and aesthetic based on her? The style has been trending for the last two years, due to Margot Robbie being sited while sporting a hot pink western outfit. With the release of Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie, her film helped Barbie come to life and helped the trendy Barbiecore come back with it.
To understand Barbie and her fashion, you need to understand her creator, Ruth Handler. Handler was business savvy and quite fashionable herself. She wanted to be able to give young girls the possibility to embody their dreams, to either become a fashion model, a doctor, a pilot, or even a farmer! And Handler made sure the dolls had the clothes to match. Handler wanted the element of fashion to help imagine the future, allowing young girls to be what they wanted to be. Handler made sure that Barbie reflected what could be and how an outfit would transport a player to look different from others, as well as career or lifestyle-wise.
So with the background information out of the way, let’s move on to the fashion style itself. The color scheme (you guessed it) is pink. It varies from hot pink, light pink, rosy pink, etc. The actual clothes can be anything, as long as it pink (shocker) and have many accessories. These can be whatever you want, but some ideas are sunglasses, necklaces, earrings, hats, handbags, shoes, etc. You can use different colors as well which could break up the pink overload. Some colors that go with pink are white, red, green, yellow, gold, orange, blue, and grey. For hairstyles, similar to accessories, it can be anything your heart desires. This style is inclusive for everybody as well.
No matter how old, or how trending, those who wear Barbiecore fall in love with it! Fashion is a form of expression. No one can tell you what you should wear, similar to how someone cannot tell you how you should feel. Not only is fashion a form of expression, but it is also a confidence booster!
