The mermaid-core trend took the waves this summer. This trend has definitely made us shake our tailfins and dive right into the style. but this trend would not have thrived if some celebrities did not help, as well as the films and shows that helped inspire it.
The release of the live-action The Little Mermaid helped this trend flip its fins and take over. It also was not just The Little Mermaid that inspired this trend, but also Aquamarine and H2O: Just Add Water as well. Despite these two being 18 years old, they still are very popular with today’s teens.
The goal of this aesthetic is to capture the color and style of the mythical creature; the mermaid. You can capture this look using anything you would like but some items that you might see people using are crochet, pleats, bedazzled pieces, ocean-esque prints, shimmery fabrics, and the color shades teal, aquamarine, green, purples, and blue. The idea around the makeup is similar; those colors, with shimmer and whatever else you would like for the look you are trying to achieve.
You might’ve seen some celebrities rocking the style. The most prominent one is Halle Bailey. She played Ariel in The Little Mermaid and for the premieres, she was seen sporting very iconic dresses. At the Los Angeles premiere, she was photographed wearing a metallic blue dress, with the neckline being structured as huge seashells. Then for the one in London, she wore a white, floor-length dress, with silver accents, as well as a matching headpiece. And finally, for the premiere in Australia, she wore a strapless pale blue gown, resembling the iconic one Ariel wears at the end of the animated film as she climbs out of the water towards Prince Eric.
Another celeb that you might’ve seen was the TikTok influencer, Chazlyn Yvonne, wearing mermaid-esque outfits. The most popular one, which was featured in the New York Times, contains a light teal-colored, tulle-layered dress, that is tied at the shoulders. She wore seashell clips in her hair and a seashell necklace, which helped further the point of the aesthetic.
This trend was definitely one of the top ones from the summer. Everybody loves a little whimsical creature, and some love basing an outfit around them.
