Before dawn on the morning of Saturday, October 14, many Manchester students embarked on this year’s first Science Club field trip to the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
Students boarded school buses around 5:45 in the morning. The five-hour long ride included stops at various rest areas along the way in heavy rain.
The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum had an amazing collection of aerospace artifacts that provided knowledge and discovery for the Hawks in attendance. Such artifacts included space gear that belonged to astronauts used during America’s first venture to the moon in 1969, decommissioned commercial aircrafts on display that students could explore from the inside, and many flight uniforms once worn by real pilots from various decades throughout history.
Despite the bad weather, students and staff walked around the National Mall after the Museum. They saw the Vietnam Memorial, the Washington Monument, and the Lincoln Memorial before leaving to come home around 5:00 PM.
On the way back to New Jersey, the science club made its last stop at the well known ‘Chesapeake House’ rest stop, on the John F. Kennedy Memorial Highway in Maryland to get some of the finest service station cuisine available.
Those on the trip had an amazing time and experienced togetherness while acquiring newfound knowledge relating to the wonders of aviation.
Special thanks to Science Club advisor Mrs. White and the chaperones for making this trip happen.
