On Saturday, December 9, the Science Club embarked on their second trip of the school year to the Sterling Hill Mining Museum in Ogdensburg, New Jersey, about two hours away.
The trip began with a brief tour of the museum’s vast collection of rare gemstones and antique mining equipment. Students viewed thousands of amazing artifacts and learned lots of interesting information about many of the museum’s most prized items, such as the Oreck Mineral Display, meteorites and fossils.
After a brief visit to the museum, the students traveled down into the tunnels of the famous Zinc Mine contained underground on the site.
In the Zinc Mine, students saw the caverns and caves within. The tour guide was both very friendly and knowledgeable about the mine’s many years of service and some of its former workers.
Antique mining gear that was actually used in the past was on display in the mine. Students also toured a dark room filled with shining crystals and selected their own rocks from the site to take home as souvenirs.
Students from the Science Club had a great time visiting this museum, and hope to go on more amazing trips soon. “It was an amazing once in a lifetime experience for those out of the range of mines,” said Juan Rojas Pena, a sophomore on the science club trip.
The Science Club’s next trip is to Mutter Museum on January 10. Contact Mrs. P. White at [email protected] for more information.
