The Eagles’ flight on the road to victory has continued, and one game lies in between the Eagles and a Super Bowl win.
The Eagles had a record setting game on Sunday, January 26th against the Washington Commanders. With the final score being 55-23, and the Eagles broke the record for most points scored in an NFC/AFC Championship Game. The Eagles had seven rushing touchdowns as well.
While his total yardage is low for his standards, Saquon Barkley rushed for 118 yards, and had three touchdowns.
The game was heavily influenced by the Eagles’ signature play, “The Tush Push”, “The Brotherly Shove” or the “QB Sneak”. The “Tush Push” is a rugby-scrum style play where the Quarterback lines up behind the Center, and three players line up behind the quarterback, and the QB launches over the center, and usually gains about a yard or two, typically used to get a first down. It is very successful, and seemingly no other team in the league can copy the play.
The Commanders tried to stop this play, but to no avail. They had so many false start penalties that the referees warned the Washington sideline that they could award Philadelphia a score if it continued.
Rookie Washington QB Jayden Daniels put up a fight, but it was short-lived. He was 28/49, 303 total yards, and had one touchdown.
The winner of the AFC Championship Game was the Kansas City Chiefs. The Buffalo Bills put up a good fight, but Patrick Mahomes and his dynasty in the making won the game, 32-29. Super Bowl LIX will be a rematch of Super Bowl LVII in 2022, with KC coming out on top in that contest, with a final score of 38-33.
No team has ever won three straight Super Bowls, and Philadelphia can only try to stop Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs from breaking history. The last time the Eagles faced the Chiefs was in a Week 11 game in 2023 in Arrowhead, with the Eagles
defeating KC, 21-17.
The Eagles only have one Super Bowl win, which came against Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII in 2017, with backup QB Nick Foles using “Philly Special” magic to upset the Patriots’ dynasty.
According to FOX Sports, Kansas City is the favorite to win Super Bowl LIX, at -125 odds to win. Philadelphia are the underdogs at +105 odds to win. In Super Bowl LVII, Philadelphia was the favorite, so sportsbooks have changed their mind on the two powerhouse teams, even with the addition of Saquon Barkley in Philly.
The Eagles will fly to New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX at the Caesar’s Superdome, with the game being played on Sunday, 2/9, with kickoff at 6:30 PM, with Kendrick Lamar and SZA performing the famous Super Bowl Halftime Show.
The question is, can the Eagles win? I believe the answer is yes. If the Chiefs can’t stop both Saquon Barkley and the “Tush Push”, then it’ll be an easy game. Kansas City has a record on the line, and Philadelphia is hungry for a Super Bowl. It can only be decided on the field.
No matter what team you will be cheering for, this will be a great game of gridiron, and history will be made.
A victory parade down Broad Street is long overdue, and the time is now for the Eagles to bring the Lombardi Trophy home to the City of Brotherly Love.
