The football season ended in November, right? Wrong. For those of us who are starved for some gridiron, we have a new hope, Girls Flag Football. It isn’t a state-sanctioned varsity sport in New Jersey, but that very well could change. Head Coach Tommy Farrell is optimistic about this season. He answered the following questions in a statement to The Talon.

Q: How is coaching Flag Football different from coaching regular football?
A: It’s a lot different, there are different techniques and schemes you have to focus on.

Q: What do you expect from the team this season?
A: I expect the ladies to have fun this season! Mr. Serratelli did a great job in the inaugural season last year, and I’m honored to build off of that and make the season fun. We have 20 girls on the team and they’re hoping to have a successful season. 

Q: Flag Football isn’t a varsity sport yet, do you expect that to change?
A:  It will become a varsity sport in 2027, with this year and next year staying in its club status. I think it’s great because the girls have opportunities to do multiple sports. 

If you watched the Super Bowl this year, you may have seen multiple commercials for the NFL’s movement to promote high school girls flag football across the nation. Girls flag football is on the rise not just in New Jersey, but nationwide. This is the sophomore season for our flag football program, and it can easily become just as popular as the boys football in the fall, if we attend the games in numbers. Come out to the games! Enjoy some quality football in the offseason of every other league!
