The 2025 Subway Series is set to ignite the baseball world, as the Mets and Yankees prepare to face off in a highly anticipated series. The first leg begins this Friday, May 16, at Yankee Stadium, with games continuing through Sunday, May 18. The rivalry will resume at Citi Field from July 4 to July 6.
The Mets come into the series with a 28–16 record, sitting atop the NL East. Their success has been driven by the most dominant pitching staff in baseball, as they lead the MLB with a team ERA of 2.84. Leading the rotation is ace Kodai Senga, who’s off to a sensational start. Senga holds a 4–2 record with an impressive 1.22 ERA and 42 strikeouts through his first eight outings.
While the Mets’ pitching has been elite, their offense has yet to fully click. Statistically, they sit in the middle of the pack in most major offensive categories. However, Pete Alonso has been a revelation in the Mets lineup. The star first baseman is hitting .311 with 9 home runs, 36 RBIs, and has a 1.004 OPS. He’s been backed by other key contributors including Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, and newly acquired Juan Soto.
On the other side of town, the Yankees enter the series with a 25–18 record and lead the American League in runs scored with 250. Their offense continues to be centered around Aaron Judge, who’s seemingly slashing his way to another MVP with a staggering 1.279 OPS.
The Yankees’ pitching has also been impressive. Max Fried has emerged as the staff ace and a Cy Young frontrunner. He’s tied for the league lead in wins with six and owns the best ERA in the AL at 1.11.
But the biggest storyline heading into the Subway Series is undoubtedly Juan Soto’s return to the Bronx. After signing a record-breaking 15-year, $765 million contract with the Mets in the offseason, Soto will step back into Yankee Stadium—this time in enemy colors.
“Juan Soto says he’s excited for his first Subway Series as a member of the Mets at Yankee Stadium,” MLB.com Mets beat writer Anthony DiComo reported on May 14.
When asked what he was most excited for, Soto answered:
“The crowd.”
A follow-up question asked Soto if he’d still be excited for the Yankee Stadium crowd “even if they boo?” Soto’s response remained cool and confident:
“I don’t mind.”
If tensions in the Bronx weren’t already high heading into Friday night, they certainly are now.
