At the Hawks Nest, we are all family. On July 29, 2025, our beloved journalism teacher, Mrs. Jill Ocone, peacefully left us. Ocone made a massive impact on many students, as well as the staff. Along with that, she was an author, yoga instructor, and amazing photographer.
Teacher Erin Berhalter, Co-worker and friend of Ocone, says she was a “dedicated, caring teacher.” She describes Ocone as, “thoughtful, generous, patient and loyal friend.” Berhalter adds, “I was blessed to have her as my friend for over 20 years, and I will always carry her close in my heart.”
Manchester Township High School (MTHS) guidance counselor and friend of Ocone, Rachel Kelly, also describes her as “talented, graceful, humble, and amazing.”
Ocone was very passionate about her work, and because of this, students will continue to carry on her legacy.
Teacher Nicolette Maloney, a student turned co-worker of Ocone, agrees that her courses were always the most popular classes at MTHS because of Ocone’s legacy and all she did with the program.
Ocone started many traditions, including the high school’s Hawkapalooza. Hawkapalooza is a student talent show; it is a night where students show what they know!
Maloney, as well as many other students, would love to bring that tradition back.
The MTHS Principal, Dennis Adams, described Jill as “extremely caring,” and “inspiring, dedicated, and committed to helping kids succeed.”
Ocone’s mentee teacher, Amanda Bean, sees Ocone as her “guiding light.”
“She convinced me to come back to teach at Manchester and she always supported me. She convinced me to study abroad in Ireland,” Bean said.
Ocone’s influence on those around her lives on.
“I will miss her every single day,” Bean said. A testament, of course, to the emotions felt by all of MTHS.
The Journalism class, The AT Cave that was built and made by Ocone, misses her terribly. The AT Cave is doing everything in their powers to keep Ocone legacy alive in every way possible. She will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
Rest in peace, Jill Ocone. Your work and dedication will live on forever.
