How to 90’s: A Fashion Guide
October 18, 2022
It has been over three decades since the 1990’s style has faded. But now it is making a comeback. The bright colors, crop tops, patterns, flared jeans, hoop earrings, and more as they slowly come into the 21st century’s fashion.
A hot item is flared jeans. It starts like any regular pair of jeans and then flares at the end. But beware, the jeans should not drag on the floor but graze the bottom of your shoe as if the jeans drag, you will ruin them. Ways you can style these are: wear an oversized sweater or tuck in a button up shirt. Shoes matter when pairing an outfit with flared jeans because they can make or break the outfit. I would suggest sandals, heeled boots, and high top sneakers. Also, a good belt can make the look even better. It flatters the waist and breaks up the length between the top and bottoms.
The hottest item at the moment; crop tops! All stores are selling this and they are a must have for any teenage girl. Crop tops are against school dress codes because schools are trying to prepare students for a professional setting. Despite this, they still have enormous fashion value and are extremely versatile because crop tops can make any outfit instantly fashionable.
Accessorizing an outfit was a big must as well. Hoop earrings were a must when it came to planning an outfit as they have a youthful yet professional look. You’ll probably see almost every girl wearing dangly hoops with your outfit nowadays. And a simple bandana (mostly paisley patterned) is popular. It can be folded into a long rectangle worn as a makeshift headband or a tied around a ponytail and bun.
The 90’s had many iconic hairstyles that you see on your favorite movies or TV shows, either being old or the new shows. One major hairstyle was “The Rachel” from the show, Friends, which was a choppy layered bob that gives off a youthful look. Another big hairstyle from the 90’s that made a comeback is the schoolgirl pigtails, which turned into buns. The hairstyles are simple, but stylish and youthful all at the same time. Also, many hair accessories came back as well. Such as butterfly clips, scrunchies, berrets and bandanas.
There are also many fashion influences and styles that you still see today; boyband, grunge, celebrity, preppy, and hip hop.
The boyband look was promoted by N’Sync, 98 Degrees, and BackStreet Boys. They gave off a rebellious but carefree look. Tank tops, leather jackets, chains, dark colors, blue jeans, sports jerseys, and Timberlands are a must have.
The music genre inspired the Grunge trend and created an army of people wearing combat boots paired with anything. Flannels, floral, or frayed jeans. Bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Green day led this trend.
The preppy look is a clean, neat, and studious style. It was assisted by Clueless, Princess Diana of Wales, J Crew, and Brittney Spears. Sweaters, khakis, sweater vests, button up shirts, polos, skirts, tights, and blazers are big in this trend.
The Hip Hop trend consisted of bright colors, loose fitting clothing, and name brand clothing such as: Champion, Nike, Adidas, etc. MC Hammer was one of the many people who inspired this trend, with his balloon pants. This style marked the end of the 90’s fashion and what marked the new fashion trend: 2000’s fashion.
Fashion goes in cycles, so hold on to your clothes and shoes because your children may need it for when this trend makes a comeback in the future.
