“Everlong”… maybe

Grace Costello, Music Columnist

In 1994, Dave Grohl, drummer of Nirvana, started his own band called, Foo Fighters, after his band mate Kurt Cobain died.

He was the frontman of this new band, being the vocalist and lead guitarist. Going from drummer to frontman was an intense change for him as you could imagine. Foo Fighters grew popular extremely quickly.

In 1997, Foo Fighters released their second album, “The Colour and the Shape”. This was their most successful album leading up to this day, and the album includes the band’s most popular song, “Everlong”.

The song “Everlong” is a musical masterpiece. Dave Grohl writes this angelic song that is simple and catchy with just enough uniqueness to set it apart from the rest of the sappy love songs existing.

Immediately the song opens up with this brilliant rhythmic riff, progressively getting louder in order to build up the suspense of Grohl’s vocals. This catchy riff plays throughout the entire song until the chorus.

Grohls lyrics depict a girl he seems to have been waiting “everlong” for, until he finally can’t wait any longer. He explains a relationship with someone who he believes is the best he will ever come by. The lyrics in the fourth verse say, “If everything could ever feel this real forever…If anything could ever be this good again”.

Grohl writes the perfect representation of what “young love” is all about, as corny as it sounds. You’re young in denial, and you truly believe that person you’ve found is the best it’s ever going to get until it unexpectedly blows up in your face. Which is what actually happened between Grohl and this mysterious girl he sings about.

I love finding out the underlying reasons behind songs and just what exactly was running through the person’s head during the time they wrote the lyrics.

In this instance, Dave Grohl was talking about Louise Lightner Post, singer of Veruca Salt.

Veruca Salt is an alternative rock band that formed in 1993 with co-founders Louise and Nina Gordon. The two were a power duo and made some incredible songs together including two of their most popular albums “Eight Arms To Hold You” and “American Thighs”.

The best way I can explain Veruca Salt is a band with a heavier guitar sound with two incredible vocalists. So, basically, if you were a girl in the 90s who was into 90s girl grunge bands you most likely listened to Hole, Veruca Salt, and Garbage.

In the late 90s, around 1997, Post and Grohl dated, which was the same time the song “Everlong” was released.

If you skip towards the end of the song you can hear a womens soft background vocals. That singer is none other than Louise Post of Veruca Salt.

On July 13, 2021, Louise Post, posted an instagram video of an “Everlong” mix with her vocals and drums isolated.

Post explains some pretty cool stuff about the two working together on the song. Post explains, “I sang these back-ups over the phone at 2 am after being woken up from a deep sleep in Chicago by Dave Grohl who was tracking the vocals for ‘Everlong’ in LA. He wanted me to sing the doo-doo’s, which was inspired by our song ‘Shimmer Girl’”.

The two wanted to keep their relationship private but eventually it became public no matter how secretive they tried to keep it.

After the song was released and Grohl and Post broke up all in the span of one year, Post announced onstage at a show in Australia that Grohl had cheated on her with Winona Ryder.

Yes, Winona Ryder, famous American actress who starred in cinema classic masterpieces such as Beetlejuice (1988), Edward Scissorhands (1990), Little Women (1994), and Heathers (1988).

I suppose Dave Grohl didn’t mean “everlong” after all, he should’ve named the song “Everlong…maybe”. Although this was a pretty messed up thing to do. It’s interesting seeing two famous people from completely different sides of fame intertwining, it’s like some strange crossover episode between Hollywood and Seattle, or cinema, and music.

Louise, Grohl, and Ryder are all amazingly talented people. Besides the fact Dave Grohl cheated, it’s pretty wild to look back on and connect some missing dots all from one single song. All is good between Dave and Louise Post now and they even remain friends.
