The Hawks Varsity Football team captured their 8th and final win this past Thursday, November 2, marking an end to their historic 2023 season. The Hawks broke the school’s record for wins within a single season and finished 2nd within their division. A major factor in the Hawk’s success this season was junior quarterback Aidan Lunn.
Lunn commanded an offense that averaged 32.7 points per game, almost double last season’s number of 16.8. Individually, Lunn doubled his previous season passing touchdowns number from 8 to 16. Additionally, Lunn increased his passing yards from 992 to 1,397, which currently places him at 30th in the state. Lunn was not only a threat throwing the ball, however, and could take off running when needed, going for 458 yards and 8 touchdowns on 53 rushing attempts.
Lunn’s improvements in every aspect of his game cemented him as one of the best quarterbacks in the Shore Conference. He finished 7th in total yards and 5th in total touchdowns in the Shore. Furthermore, Lunn’s talent to be a threat from multiple angles makes him stand out from his opponents, especially as the running quarterback archetype begins to become more commonplace in high school football. Only 2 Shore Conference quarterbacks threw for more yards than Lunn and both did so on 50+ more attempts. Neither of which, however, could live up to Lunn’s running stats. This ability to score on a run or a throw builds a unique recruiting profile for Lunn, which could help him play in college, something that has always been a goal of his.
“My dream for playing in college is like every other athlete, to make it to [division] 1. Being able to play at the highest level of college football is ideal and I believe that this season definitely helped. It put my name on notice and allowed me to believe that I can get [division] 2 offers and maybe even some AA d1 offers,” Lunn said about his future aspirations of playing in college. He additionally mentioned how he will be attending multiple offseason camps, looking to put his name out there and improve his game for next year’s season.
Lunn remains humble despite his accomplishments and credits some of his success to his teammates and coaches around him, “Having the help from amazing coaches and a very supportive team definitely have helped me this season with my playing style. Even when I made mistakes they believed in me every step of the way”.
While the Hawk’s offense is losing a lot of talent to graduation next season, including star senior running back Josh Love, they will remain a dangerous offense for as long as they have Aidan Lunn under center.
