The Eagles’ most legendary defensive end is back. Two-time Super Bowl champion Brandon Graham has un-retired, and will don Midnight Green for another year.
Graham, the Eagles’ all-time leader in games played (206), had announced his retirement in March, following the Eagles’ 40-22 victory in Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles have struggled on defense, and with the retirement of Za’Darius Smith, the Eagles needed a veteran on defense. The rumor mill had said Graham was considering un-retirement as far back as two weeks ago, but not many expected Graham to return to the City of Brotherly Love for one more season.
Graham suffered an injury during the regular season last year, which kept him sidelined until the day before Super Bowl LIX, where he played what many thought was his last game for the Eagles, where he recorded only one tackle. If you’ve ever watched Graham play, you’ll know this wasn’t enough for him. Granted, another Super Bowl ring is a nice way to end a career, but why stop at two if you can go for the trifecta? Graham is as hungry as a rookie for more wins, more games, more snaps on defense.
Graham will also give the Eagles’ young defense some much-needed guidance. With their win against long-time Eagles QB Carson Wentz and the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, the Eagles are looking to get their season back on track, and prove their intentions to bring the Lombardi Trophy home to the Linc for a second consecutive year.
While the Eagles have one of the youngest teams in the NFL, they’ve faced many tough retirements as of late. For example, stars like Jason Kelce, Za’Darius Smith, and Fletcher Cox have notably retired within the last three years.
Overall, the Eagles have got themselves an invaluable player on their defense. If Graham can perform the way Eagles-faithful know he can, the Eagles’ snafus on defense can be ended for good. I know I can’t wait until I see #55 walk out of the tunnel against the New York Giants on Sunday.
