She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode Four: “Is This Not Real Magic?”

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode Four: “Is This Not Real Magic?”

originally aired on September 8th, 2022.

Spoilers Ahead!

Though She-Hulk has already appeared in other animated series this is the first time She-Hulk has ever been live-action with her own solo project on Disney+. Since the Incredible Hulk is a more popular character than She-Hulk, her comic history isn’t as known. So before watching She-Hulk: Attorney At Law fans should know some basic background information on a lesser known character. The character of She-Hulk first appeared in 1980 in her own solo comic book series, She-Hulk. Jennifer Walters, our main character of the series, later transforms into the title character. Jen is just a normal lawyer, well not that normal. She is an attorney at law in Los Angeles hence the title of the Disney+ series. She first becomes She-Hulk after obtaining a dangerous injury, Jennifer gets a blood transfusion with donated blood from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Due to acquiring some of his blood, she becomes a milder version of the Hulk… AKA She-Hulk.

(this episode runs for thirty-seven minutes)

“WONGERS”

Hidden Details/Easter Eggs:

  • The “cut-rate magician” in episode four is named Donny Blaze which is a playful spoof to comic character Johnny Blaze AKA Ghost Rider. It is forgotten very often that Nicolas Cage has portrayed a live-action version of Johnny Blaze in the 2007 and 2011 Ghost Rider films.
  • Wong is seen watching The Sopranos (season 5, episode 12), up until Madisynn is portalled to his living room. Before this Wong is actually dancing to the intro. Music of the show before Madisynn arrives. Madisynn then spoils the massive plot for Wong… “Wait. This is the one where they kill Adriana. It was so sad.”
  • Fans are still on the WandaVision-Mephisto kick including BuzzFeed. When Wong asks where the “cut-rate magician” sent Madisynn. She replies, “Um, not exactly. He sent me to a diff diminish… and a talking goat helped me escape a lava pit in exchange for six drops of my blood.” BuzzFeed pointed out that “When Madisynn mentions how she went to another dimension where a talking goat wanted her blood, it could really be a reference to Mephisto, whose true form is a goat-like demon.”
  • Most of the reviews for the She-Hulk show are quite negative, demeaning to women, and just straight up sexist. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law even incorporated the negativity and hate into the storyline. Jen hilariously jokes about Wong’s cameo, “Mmm. You look happy. I guess you saw that Wong is back. God, everybody loves Wong.” Jen then goes on to say, “It’s like giving the show Twitter armor for a week.” It’s hilarious that Jen is not only breaking the fourth wall but while doing this calling out all the negative comments said about She-Hulk.
  • Wong is back for yet another She-Hulk episode!! Fans are even going as far to say that the MCU should be changed to the WCU aka the Wong Cinematic Universe. As he has been cameoing in most of the recent Marvel projects and of course stealing the show. Recently he’s been in She-Hulk: Attorney At Law (duh), Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
  • On Jen’s to-do list some of the items listed are, “Meet Nikki in the bathroom @ 11:47”, “Gym (lol), “Order more chopsticks”, “Stop wasting chopsticks”, and “Find ‘direct’ contact info for Wong”.
  • Another fun little detail on Jen’s to-do list reads, “Compile depostopms for Lee v. Byrne”. This is of course a reference to the men behind the creation of the She-Hulk comics, Stan Lee and John Bryne. John Bryne is most notably the artist and writer behind one of the most popular She-Hulk comic series, The Sensational She-Hulk.
  • Yet another nod on the to-do list to some of the creators behind the She-Hulk comics includes, “File discovery request for Kraft v. Soule”. This a reference to David Anthony Kraft and Charles Soule who both wrote She-Hulk comics. Kraft wrote the Savage She-Hulk series where Soule wrote She-Hulk Vol. 3.
  • On Jen’s dating profile her preferred height in a partner is between 5 ft. 6 in. to 8 ft. This is of course because when Jen is “Just Jen” she is tiny whereas She-Hulk she is this 6 ft. tall superhero.
  • Seen in the trailers Jen tells Wong, “No judge is gonna take this seriously unless we do things by the book.” Wong replies, “Oh, The Book of Vishanti.” “No, the book of… American laws.” This is a reference to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to when Wanda who is not the Scarlet Witch goes after Strange and America for The Book of Vishanti.
  • Once again, Jen’s phone background is hilariously Steve Roger/Captain America’s butt which is of course a nod to Avengers: Endgame. “That is America’s ass.”
  • While under oath Madisynn says, “I made a pact with a demon that I cannot discuss. Otherwise he said he would ‘reap my soul and the souls of all I love,’ which honestly, is so dramatic. And I hate drama.” Once again fans seem to be on the WandaVision-Mephisto kick again believing that this magical goat was actually Mephisto. Since Mephisto is Marvel’s version of the devil (literally).
  • While Jen, well She-Hulk, is on her blind date, he says, “I eman, your battle with Titania in court, it was incredible.” She-Hulk hilariously says, “Uh, people love using that word around me.” This is an incredible nod to the 2008 Incredible Hulk film starring Ed Norton and even just the Hulk comic line.
  • Before Wong goes to help Donny, he is seen watching This Is Us (season 2, episode 15) titled “The Car”. This is one of the most popular This Is Us episodes, notably because this is the episode about Jack’s death.
  • The credits show Madisynn signing her soul away to the magically goat with glowing red eyes. Which once again is theorized to be Mephisto.
  • Fans might want to watch until the credits since the post-credit scene is of Wong and Madisynn, who are now besties, are watching This Is Us together.
  • This isn’t an easter egg but can we all take a moment and appreciate Wongers and Madisynn’s new found friendship because it basically made this entire episode. Hopefully, we’ll see more of Madisynn and Wongers in the future. Maybe the MCU stands for the Madisynn Cinematic Universe.
