She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Episode One: “Normal Amount of Rage”

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law Series Premiere Episode One : “Normal Amount of Rage”

originally aired on August 18th, 2022.

Spoilers Ahead!!

Though She-Hulk has already appeared in other animated series, this is the first time She-Hulk has ever been live-action with her own solo project on Disney+. Since the Incredible Hulk is a more popular character than She-Hulk, her comic history isn’t as known. So before watching She-Hulk: Attorney At Law fans should know some basic background information on a lesser known character. The character of She-Hulk first appeared in 1980 in her own solo comic book series, She-Hulk. Jennifer Walters, our main character of the series, later transforms into the title character. Jen is just a normal lawyer, well not that normal. She is an attorney at law in Los Angeles hence the title of the Disney+ series. She first becomes She-Hulk after obtaining a dangerous injury, Jennifer gets a blood transfusion with donated blood from her cousin, Bruce Banner. Due to acquiring some of his blood, she becomes a milder version of the Hulk… AKA She-Hulk.

(this episode runs for thirty-eight minutes)

Hidden Details and Easter Eggs:

  • During the Marvel Studios opening viewers can see that Kamala Khan has been added in the “R” of Marvel where Moon Knight has been taken out of the “M” so quickly.
  • Fans are also a little disappointed that the Marvel Studios logo stayed its usual red color and did not change to green for She-Hulk
  • However, fans are not outraged at all though by the She-Hulk title and title design. Originally Marvel leaked the title and design of She/Hulk in all white text with a city background behind. Now it is a more artsy font having “She” in purple and “HULK” in green, matching She-Hulk’s iconic super suit. The original title was just She/Hulk, now it has been changed to She-Hulk: Attorney At Law
  • The first clip in the series is of Jennifer Walters practicing her closing argument in front of her colleague, Dennis, and best friend, Nikki. In Jen’s office viewers can see an University of California diploma as well as a USLA mug on her bookshelf. Viewers can also catch a Ruth Bader Ginsburg bobblehead which is a great attention to detail especially since She-Hulk: Attorney At Law focuses on female empowerment and gender equality. So having this feminist icon detail in the series is keen for a feminist piece like She-Hulk
  • Nikki says to Jen, “now top it off with a savage Jen Walters look.” This is a nod to the very first issue of She-Hulk from 1980 titled, “The Savage She-Hulk”.
  • She-Hulk establishes right from off the bat that our main character Jen will be breaking the fourth wall throughout the show. This would be a first for Marvel Studios though it subtly teased it in WandaVision. This is a great attention to detail but in the comics, Jennifer Walters often breaks the fourth wall to directly talk to the readers. “Yeah, about that. Um, it’s true. I am a Hulk.”
  • While breaking the fourth wall Jen lets the audience know she’s a Hulk and then proceeds to tell us her origins before the story goes any further. “Un, and I’m guessing you won’t be able to focus on this fun lawyer show until you know all about that. So, let me get you up to speed.”
  • While on a roadtrip with Jen, Bruce Banner reveals how he created a device to restrain his Hulk form which finally answers why Bruce was Bruce Banner in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings and not Smart Hulk like he was in Avengers: Endgame. If you don’t recall Bruce Banner cameos in the end credit scene in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings and if you look really closely you can even see the device he is talking about that keeps him out of the Hulk form. “It’s all because I made this little device which keeps me in my human form.”
  • The ship that runs Jen and Bruce off the road is Sakaaran seen in Thor: Ragnarok where Bruce in his Hulk form spent most of his time on Sakaar. This begs the question why a Sakaaran ship is hunting down Bruce. Is this the beginning of World War Hulk? Possibly. At the She-Hulk premiere Mark Ruffalo said he would be down for coming back as Bruce Banner/The Hulk for a World War Hulk film or possible Disney+ series. The World War Hulk crossover comic introduces Skaar, who is the son of Hulk. So if the rumors are true it seemed the Hulk would have been pretty busy on Sakaar.
  • After Bruce and Jen are wounded from the car crash, Jen gains her Hulk powers after being contaminated with Bruce’s blood. She-Hulk’s origin story has been changed a bit from the comics. Originally she first becomes She-Hulk after obtaining a dangerous injury, Jennifer gets a blood transfusion with donated blood from her cousin, Bruce Banner. “No, Jen. Jen, I’m bleeding. Jen, get away from me. I’m bleeding.”
  • Throughout the last couple Disney+ series, Marvel has been hiding scannable QR codes in each episode that brings viewers to a free comic book. She-Hulk: Attorney At Law is not much different from Moon Knight. In “Normal Amount of Rage” when Jen enters the bar after becoming She-Hulk for the first time, on the wall of the bar a QR appears and if scanned will bring you to a digital copy of the very first issue of She-Hulk from 1980 titled, “The Savage She-Hulk” (mentioned above).
  • At Bruce’s place Jen can be seen wearing a Led Zeppelin shirt which fans are assuming was Tony’s after it was revealed that Bruce’s place used to be Tony’s. If fans can’t recall Bruce actually wore one of Tony’s iconic band shirts back in Thor: Ragnarok. #sciencebros
  • While Jen is looking around Bruce’s house, she spots a damaged Iron Man helmet. Many fans pointed out that this helmet could be from the Iron Legions seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • “You’re Hulk again.” “Smart Hulk. I didn’t come up with it. You never have a choice with these names.” Marvel never actually mentioned HUlk being named Smart Hulk up until this moment in She-Hulk. This is a nod to how the fans actually nicknamed the new version of Hulk after Avengers: Endgame
  • BuzzFeed brought up that “Bruce mentions how he and Jen share a “rare combination of genetic factors” that allowed them to synthesize gamma radiation into the Hulk gene.”
  • Jen mentions Bing Bong’s tragic, emotional death scene from Pixar’s Inside Out which makes Pixar canonized in the Marvel universe. “Oohh! Put on a Pixar movie. When Bing Bong jumps out of the wagon in Inside Out-” “Bing Bong. No. No. Stop.”
  • “Usually, I fall out of a jet or I get knocked out by a robot, and I’d wake up as Banner. Or Natasha, for a little while, would tell me a lullaby.” Bruce mentions some of the ways he transformed back to himself as seen in Age of Ultron. When Tony beat the Hulk with the Hulk Buster and even jokes that Natasha’s lullaby was odd to say the least which even fans have to agree with. “Hey, big guy. Sun’s getting real low.”
  • When Jen and Bruce were arguing which turned into a full out brawl, both of them can be seen using the thunder clap. Which is an iconic Hulk move that was first seen in the 2008 Incredible Hulk movie that fans have seemingly forgotten is cannon is the MCU. It also doesn’t help that Ms. Marvel star, Iman Vallani, claims that she doesn’t count the film starring Ed Norton cannon.
  • Jameela Jamil made her grand MCU debut as the She-Hulk antagonist, Titania. This character was taken directly from the comics where her greatest enemy is She-Hulk but also occasionally fights Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, and Captain America. “Who the hell are you?” “Jennifer Walters, attorney at law.”
  • Fans are absolutely loving the She-Hulk credits that are drawings of stills from the episode or the series which are full of easter eggs. In the drawing of Jen at work at her desk, she is surrounded by case files and one in which has the SHIELD logo in the corner of it.
  • She-Hulk: Attorney At Law has a hilarious post-credit scene revolving Captain America’s love life and fans just have to watch it themselves. This is possibly one of the most hilarious credit scenes the MCU has given us. Chris Evans already commented on this development with his character with his hilarious tweet which just consisted of three crying laughing emojis followed by one with it’s mouth zipped shut with #SheHulk.
