The Garden State is often overlooked by major sports teams. The only team that claims New Jersey as its proper home in the Big Four sports (NBA, MLB, NFL, NHL) is the New Jersey Devils, who play way up in Newark. Granted, various minor-league teams call New Jersey home, such as the Jersey Shore BlueClaws and the Somerset Patriots. But in Hockey, the aforementioned Devils are the only ones who skate around our state. That is soon to change.
The ECHL (East Coast Hockey League) is the third-highest level of professional Hockey in North America. Think of it as Double-AA baseball. The Trenton Ironhawks will debut in the ECHL’s 2026-27 season, so next season. However, it will not be a “new” team for more than one reason. The current team name for the Ironhawks is the Utah Grizzlies, an affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche. The move to Trenton makes sense, because the main Utah team, the Utah Mammoth debuted in the NHL last season as the Utah Hockey Club, formerly the Arizona Coyotes.
Another reason this move makes sense is because it’ll be a second homecoming of sorts. The ECHL used to have a team in Trenton, who played in the same stadium as the Ironhawks. The Trenton Titans played in Trenton from 1997-2013, with limited success. Reasons for this are varied, but the CURE Insurance Arena, where the Titans played and where the Ironhawks will play, is only 40 minutes away from the Philadelphia Flyers’ arena, and only an hour away from the Devils’ arena.
The Ironhawks were announced in July of 2025, but they had no name. They hosted a “name the team” contest, and on January 13th of this year, the Ironhawks moniker was announced. According to the official ECHL press release, over 2,000 entries were recorded for the contest, showing local interest into the team. Over 650 season-ticket holders have already signed up for the inaugural 26-27 season. The CURE Insurance Arena is also undergoing renovations to improve fan conditions, the press release states. The Ironhawks team colors are blue, grey, and red. The logo is a hawk cladded with iron, which symbolizes Trenton’s steel industry.
Hockey is big in New Jersey, and it’s a surprise that for over a decade, the only big team has been the Devils. South and Central Jersey has been rather underserved, with both the former Titans and Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies of the ECHL disbanding within the last three decades. I’m looking forward to seeing the Ironhawks in the future, I’m almost certain I’ll go to a game or two in Trenton, and I hope many fans go, as the Ironhawks will be a perfect setting for a family night out.
The Ironhawks will fly into Trenton with high expectations. I hope that they’ll become a Trenton staple, a team who will be built into the local culture. I can’t wait for the inaugural puck drop in Trenton.
