What is the WOBM Christmas Tournament?

Joe Bentivegna, Staff Writer

It’s almost that time of the year, the WOBM Christmas Tournament is approaching and there are some big changes for 2022. The WOBM Tournament originated in 1984 and it has been a holiday tradition ever since. The tournament contains 16 teams, both boys and girls, and all teams are guaranteed 3 games.

The tournament seeds and first-round matchups came out on Monday the 12th and the matchups look interesting.  For the boys brackets, Manasquan and Jackson Memorial were seeded 1st , followed by the rest.

For the Girls Ewing and Red Bank Catholic were seeded 1st for their brackets.

This year the tournament will be balancing the competition by taking the 16 teams and breaking them up into a balanced bracket of eight. The reasoning for this is because of blowouts in past tournaments and that’s just no fun. Other topics of discussion for this change was scheduling and the amount of games played between all teams. With these changes to the tournament, it will make the games more exciting and fair.

In addition with all these changes, Jersey Mike’s makes a return for the WOBM 38th annual year. Jersey Mike’s will also be giving out a new holiday gift card. Holding the Christmas Classic from December 26-30 will truly make it feel like a holiday tournament. Winners will play again on Wednesday December 28th, while the first round losers move into consolation games on Tuesday and again on Thursday.

The Marlboro boys and Red Bank Catholic girls are the defending champions.

This year’s Hoops tournament is going to be something to see,  so come and watch your favorite school play. You don’t want to miss it
