“My name is Peter Parker…” Spider-Man: No Way Home Reflection Pt. 5

Sony and Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: No Way Home is the third highest-grossing film of all time. It not only broke box office records and became the most wildly successful and popular Marvel Studios movies. The film also completely broke fans’ hearts with its brutal ending and had some of the wildest audience reactions of any movie. Spider-Man: No Way Home not only expanded Marvel’s stakes but perfected the character of Peter Parker without losing sight of his (spidey) sense of humor, heart, and the struggle of trying to live two separate lives. Since it has been a year since the initial release, let’s rewind back to December of 2021 and reminisce of the greatest scenes to come out of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
The AMAZING star-studded cast full of three different Spider-Man trilogy actors includes Tom Holland (Peter Parker 1/Spider-Man), Zendaya (Michelle Jones “MJ” Watson), Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Stephen Strange), Jacob Batalon (Ned Leeds), Jon Favreau (“Happy” Hogan), Jamie Foxx (Electro), Willem Dafoe (Green Goblin), Alfred Molina (Doctor Octopus “Doc Ock”), Thomas Haden Church (Sandman), Rhys Ifans (Lizard), Benedict Wong (Wong), Tony Revolori (“Flash” Thompson), Marisa Tomei (Aunt May Parker), and JK Simmons (J.Jonah Jameson). With surprise cameos by Charlie Cox (Matt Murdock), Tom Hardy (Eddie Brock/Venom), Andrew Garfield (Peter Parker 3/Amazing Spider-Man), and Tobey Maguire out of retirement to reprise his role as the original Peter Parker 2/Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man!!

Doctor Otto Octavius’ Redemption
“I will not die a monster!!”
When Electro gets to the Statue of Liberty, he is ready for battle… Maybe too ready. He’s all charged up and his new source of electricity, the arc reactor, is making him the most powerful he has ever been. Peter, with extensive knowledge on arc reactors, says, “It’s the arc reactor, we gotta get it off him.” Electro replies, “You’re not gonna take this away from me.” The only way for the Spider-Men to get the arc reactor is to get close enough to him. When Peter 3 (Garfield) tries to attack Max to get the arc reactor, it is just out of his grip when Electro pins him with his surging power. Peter 2 (Maguire) drops the cure device, he webs it and is just about to grasp it when suddenly a tentacle arm grabs it and swings him back. Peter 2 drops the cure. Another tentacle grabs Peter 3 as Electro’s bolts jolt through him. As the camera rises up on Doc Ock with Electro behind him, Otto says, “Leave ‘em. They’re mine.” Electro refuses the help from Doc Ock as he doesn’t need it. Peter 2, recognizing, yells, “Dr. Octavius, no…” Otto turns to grin. His third tentacle latches onto the arc reactor, ripping it off his chest, while another tentacle sets the cure device in place. A blast dissipates Electro’s currents. Electro is no more, Max Dillon is back… cured. Doc Ock redeems himself, “There you go.” This was one of the best scenes in No Way Home based on how well it connected to the original trilogy. At the end of Spider-Man 2, Otto’s last words as he sacrifices himself to drown his machine in the river are, “I will not die a monster!!” Like most of the Spider-Man villains, Doctor Otto Octavius became Doc Ock reluctantly… None of them, especially Doc Ock, chose their villainous path but in spite of themselves were forced into becoming a villain.
Strange Magic…
“Well, I’ll be damned.”
In the heat of the fight, MJ and Ned are thrown in the middle of it. MJ has the magic box and being the logical thinker she is, insists they have to hide it. Ned quickly opens a portal with a warm desert breeze blowing through, out of the Mirror Dimension steps Doctor Strange. As angry and upset and frustrated Strange is, Ned tries to reassure him, “Dr. Strange, sir, uh… Peter’s plan is working!! He’s curing them!!” Doctor Strange walks forward in time to see… The Lizard transforming back into Dr. Curt Connors with Spider-Man at his side. “Doctor Connors?? Welcome back, sir.” To Strange’s surprise, he’s right… The cures are working… “Well, I’ll be damned.” He’s not only shocked by that but that Ned opened a portal as well. But he’s magic now so…
Can’t Be a Nobody… So, You Have To Be a Somebody “You were never a nobody, Max.”
While getting ready for the Statue of Liberty fight, Peter 3 tells Peter 2, “You know Max was, like, the sweetest guy ever… before he fell into a pool of electric eels.” This is a callback to Max’s character in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 which is quite tragic. Max Dillon is just a man who wants to be seen… He even tells Spider-Man, “I’m a nobody…” To his reply he says, “You’re not a nobody, you’re a somebody.” This kind of changes Max, since someone as known as Spider-Man, actually sees Max for who he is. However, Max lashes out with his newfound powers as he feels betrayed by not just the people around him, but society as well. Though the Webb Amazing Spider-Man films were not everyone’s favorites and a bit lacking in some areas. Max’s villainous storyline wasn’t the best but became a more complex character as it was carried over into No Way Home. When Max is cured, Peter is very cautious at first to make sure he is all tapped out. To come full circle, Max tells Peter, “Back to being a nobody.” With Peter, once again, replying, “You were never a nobody, Max.”
Max actually tells Peter, “You gotta nice face. You just a kid. You from Queens. You got that suit. You help a lot of poor people. I just thought you was gonna be Black.” Peter, being awkward, says, “Oh man, I’m sorry.” Max then adds, “There’s gotta be a Black Spider-Man somewhere out there.” So, is Marvel hinting at their next big web-slinging hero?? Marvel is just teasing Miles Morales, which makes a lot of (spidey) sense since they have already introduced his uncle in the MCU. Aaron Davis was introduced back in Spider-Man: Homecoming, where he brought up his nephew who lived in the neighborhood with Peter. Which was hinting at Miles back in 2017…
Peter and Otto’s Reunion “Why It’s Good to See You My Dear Boy”
Throughout No Way Home, Doc Ock repeats his iconic Spider-Man 2 line, “The power of the sun, in the palm of my hand.” But what was more heartwarming was when Peter 2 (Tobey Maguire) reunited with Otto. As Otto examines the arc reactor in his hand, he says, “The power of the sun…” As he says this Peter 2 lands behind him and finishes the line, “In the palm of your hand.” Doc Ock turns to face him, “Peter??” Spider-Man pulls his mask off to reveal Maguire. “Otto!!” Now cured, Otto says, “Oh, it’s good to see you, dear boy.” “It’s good to see you.” Now for a more sentimental moment, Otto says, “You’re all grown up. How are you??” Peter replies, “Trying to do better.” This is a direct nod to Spider-Man 2 because it’s Peter’s same reply. When Otto tells Peter that “being brilliant is not enough, young man. You have to work hard.” During this scene, Maguire’s Spider-Man theme can be heard playing in the background.
“I’ve been dangling over the Grand Canyon for TWELVE HOURS!!”
Doctor Strange, with the box, emerges from a portal near the crown of the Statue of Liberty just as Spider-Man drops down there. Peter tries to stop Strange saying that the cures are working and they’re so close so he has to wait!! “Skip it!! I’ve been dangling over the Grand Canyon for twelve hours!!” Doctor Strange stops dead in his tracks when he notices Peter 2 (Maguire). But his jaw drops completely when Peter 3 (Garfield) falls in, having all three Spider-Men in a row. Maguire and Garfield both start to get a little defensive with Strange when Peter 2 asks, “You went to the Grand Canyon??” Where Peter 3 replies, “He coulda used your help, man.” To which Strange just rolls his eyes. “No, no, no, it’s okay! It’s okay! Uh, these… these are my new friends. (re: Raimi-Verse Peter) This is Peter Parker. (re: Webb-Verse Peter) This is Peter Parker. Spider-Man. Spider-Man. They’re mes from… other universes. They’re here to help.” Strange, being the only voice of reason, says, “Look, I am really impressed that you’ve managed to give them all a second chance, kid. But this has to end. Now.” Before he can finish his sentence, Green Goblin makes his grand entrance on his glider. “Can the Spider-Man come out to play?!” After gliding through the sky, he volleys pumpkin bombs that Doc Ock springs into action, grabbing one in Doctor Strange’s path as Peter quickly dodges several explosions. During the chaos, Goblin swoops down and steals the box from Doctor Strange. But one of Doc Ock’s tentacles grabs his glider to hold him in place as Strange uses the Eldritch Whip to steal the box back. Strange begins to manipulate the box, suddenly all three Peters sense something… There is something in the box, something inside, a pumpkin bomb!! “Strange, no!!” The bomb detonates and the box explodes!! Spinning the broken magic, unleashed and unstable spell…
The Amazing Spider-Man’s Redemption
“I lost… I lost Gwen, my, um, she was my MJ.”
Due to the broken spell, it ripples through the Statue of Liberty, to the new and improved Captain America shield. Which breaks off, falling through each level of the scaffolding. MJ falls backwards… Ned tries to catch her but loses his own balance, barely managing to grab back on. Peter hears MJ screams and dives to catch her, reaching his hand out to grab her, when all of a sudden Green Goblin’s glider slams into him. Sending him into the opposite direction. Neither Ned nor Peter (Holland) can catch her. But Peter 3 quickly reacts and swings down towards her. He catches MJ just in time. This mirrors Gwen’s death from The Amazing Spider- 2. Peter finally gets the redemption that has been eating him up for all these years, by saving MJ… Of course he tears up knowing he could finally save her. “Are you okay??” “Yeah. I’m okay. (then, noticing) Are you okay??” Fans can notice that Peter is overwhelmed with emotion as he just had to relive the worst moment of his life… losing Gwen. But this time, he prevailed, and saved MJ.
Magical Ned “I’m magic now!!”
While the scaffolding is collapsing, Ned loses his grip… He begins to plummet, flailing in mid-air when all of sudden he is saved by the Cloak of Levitation. Ned truly is magic now with not only the sling ring but with the cloak now too. Ned even tells Peter, “I’m magic now!!” MJ replies, “Yeah, no, no, he’s right. Yeah, he can.” Where the other Peters nod in agreement, “Yeah, we saw it.” “Yeah, he is.” Peter is completely shocked by this new found information about his best friend, “Wait, really??” Ned hilariously says, “Dude, I got Dr. Strange-magic.” When the Cloak of Levitation drops Ned off and flies away, Ned says, “Thank you, Mr. Cape. Sir.”
Rageful, Bitter Peter Fights Green Goblin
“I just want to kill you myself.”
The last villain to fight is the uncured Green Goblin. Right when Peter is checking up on MJ and Ned, Peter is jolted by Green Goblin landing on the end of the broken off shield of Captain America. The sun is just beginning to rise across the horizon, Peter faces the Goblin, eyes narrowing, seeing red… To anger him even more, Goblin says, “Poor, Peter. Too weak to send me home to die.” Where Peter just replies, “No. I just want to kill you myself.” “Attaboy!!” This may be one of the saddest parallels in No Way Home. The first time we saw Peter was in Captain America: Civil War. Everything for him was different, his lifestyle shifted due to his new found powers. He told Tony he couldn’t go to Germany because he has homework, which, let’s be honest, is the most childish thing a hero can say. The entirety of Homecoming, Peter just wants to impress Mr. Stark because he wants to become an official Avenger. But at the end when Tony finally offers him a full time position on the team, he declines. He’d rather focus on normal teenage stuff… The way Marvel turned Peter from an innocent, neighborhood crime fighting hero to a rageful hero, was quite impressive. Peter lost everything and it took a toll on him which was shown in this fight. Green Goblin just continues to taunt Peter, “She was there because of you… I may have struck the blow. But you… (laughs) You are the one that killed her.” Peter, who is so distraught and rageful over May’s death, beats Green Goblin over and over again, losing control until he is stopped by Peter 2.
Cast a New Spell… Peter’s Fate…
“What if everyone forgot who I was??”
Because of the uncontrollable spell that was unleashed from the box… “That little spell that you botched where you wanted everyone to forget that Peter Parker’s Spider-Man, it started pulling in everyone who knows Peter Parker’s Spider-Man — from every universe — into this one.” So as the spell breaks through the sky, everyone who knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man is emerging into one universe. As the multiverse begins to crack, through the cracks viewers can see the silhouette of multiversal characters coming through, some include Rhino, Mysterio, Scorpion, Black Cat, and Kraven the Hunter. After getting stabbed by Green Goblin, before the cure, Peter 2 says, “What?? Is that happening, or am I dying??” “Oh, yeah, no. That’s happening, that’s real.” “Are there… people in the sky??” Peter goes to the top of the Statue of Liberty, to the torch, where Strange is, to try to understand what’s happening. “They’re starting to come through, and I can’t stop ‘em!!” Peter, being the hero he is, keeps trying to fix all of this since it’s his mess. He knows he messed by sending the villains here and he is the only one who can fix it. “There’s gotta be something we can do!! Can’t you just cast the spell again?? But the original way, before I screwed it up.” “We’re too late for that. They’re here!! They’re here because of you.” Peter comes to the realization on how to solve everything… which just breaks my heart. “What if everyone forgot who I was?? They’re coming here because of me, right?? Because I’m Peter Parker?? So cast a new spell, but this time make everyone forget who Peter Parker is. Make everyone forget… me.” Right away Doctor Strange is completely against this, “NO.” But being in the hero gig, Peter understands he has to sacrifice things. “But it would work, right??” Strange, knowing, says, “Yeah, it would work. But you gotta understand that would mean that everyone who knows and loves you, we… (voice catches) We’d have no memory of you. It would be as though you never existed.” “… I know. (resolved) Do it.”
This moment between Strange and Peter is sentimental because when Strange explains the long term effects of this spell, he says that everyone who loves Peter… and then says we would have no memory of you. This implies that he cares about Peter after all of this.
A Strange Goodbye… “So long, kid.”
Right before he casts the spell, Strange tells Peter, “You better go and say your goodbyes. You don’t have long.” “Thank you, sir.” Peter is about to leave when Strange says, “Call me Stephen.” “Thank you, Stephen.” “(smiles) Yeah… still feels weird…” This is a call back to the beginning of the film when Strange says, “Please, we saved half of the universe together, I think we’re beyond you calling me ‘sir’.” But when Peter calls him Stephen, “That feels weird. But I’ll allow it.” Strange looks up at the sky as the multiverse is unfolding, he begins to cast the new spell, “So long, kid.”
3 Is the Magic Number!! “I love you guys!!”
Before Peter says his goodbyes to Ned and MJ, he has send off some of his new friends. “Hey! Uh… I think this is it. I think you’re about to go home.” Peter begins to stumble upon his words as he tries to think of something, anything to say to, well, Peters… “Um, look, I, uh… thank you! I just want to– I want you– I want to tell you that… I really don’t know how to say this, I–. I want you to know that I’m–” The two Peters just smile at him as Peter 2 cuts him off, “You know. It’s what we do.” Peter begins to go off but quickly turns back to hug the two of them, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” Peter runs off to find Ned and MJ, Peter 2 winces. Peter 3 points out, “You’re in so much pain, huh??”
So long… Not a Goodbye…
Once Peter finds Ned and MJ, he struggles to find the right words… As the new spell is quickly starting, Peter blurts out, “You’re gonna forget who I am. It’s okay. I’m gonna come and find you, and I’ll explain everything. I’ll make you remember me, and it will be like none of this ever happened. Okay??” The mood suddenly shifts once Ned and MJ realize. MJ begins to panic, “Okay, but what if that doesn’t work?? What if– What if that doesn’t work?? What if we can’t remember you?? I don’t want to do that. I don’t– I don’t want to do that. But, what– Is there not something we can do?? We can’t come up with, like, a plan or something, you know?? There’s always something we can do??” Something that doesn’t happen often in hero movies is failing, but Peter admits, “There’s nothing we can do.” Peter, Ned, and MJ share a painful goodbye but Peter promises he’ll find them and make them remember… Peter’s goodbyes to Ned and MJ will pull at your heartstrings. Peter and Ned bittersweetly do their special handshake from Spider-Man: Homecoming but pull into a hug. “I’ll come find you, okay??” “I know you will.” When fans watched this for the first time, they didn’t know the true impact this scene had. Watching Peter and Ned do their handshake one last time makes fans hysterical because of the brutal ending… Ned doesn’t remember their handshake or anything with or about Peter. It’s just gone. All you feel from this movie is pain.
Peter and MJ’s goodbye is just as emotional. Even though this is the last time they’ll see each other, and actually remember one another, MJ still keeps her head held high. She even makes a joke in this difficult time, “You better. If you don’t, I’m just gonna figure it out. I’ve done it before, I can do it again.” Peter reassures her, “I promise I’ll fix this.” Once again she cracks a joke, “MJ I really hate magic.” Peter laughs, “Yeah, me too.” She takes him in, kisses him, and whispers, “I love you.” But she doesn’t let Peter say it, “Just wait. Wait and tell me when you see me again.” A shot that goes unseen by many is when Peter leaps away, looks back at MJ as the spell is just about to hit her, she mouths one last “I love you”. Peter stairs into the camera and fans feel this is a goodbye to audiences as well. Peter webs away just as the spell takes effect. The shot slowly fades into the morning sun, as it rises over Lady Liberty. Which is also an important still as it shows a sentimental of Spider-Man’s origins and his New York routes. J. Jonah Jameson narrates, “It’s been a few weeks since the fiasco on the Statue of Liberty– And Spider-Man’s cultists continue to contend that the vile vigilante is a hero! Well, if he were a hero, he’d unmask himself and tell us who he really is!! Because only a coward conceals his identity. Only a coward hides his true intentions!! Rest assured, ladies and gentlemen, this reporter will uncover those intentions come hell or high water.” This Daily Bugle report is mainly to show viewers that the spell did in fact work and no one knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man… but that also means that no one knows who Peter Parker is…
“Hi, my name is Peter Parker…”
After the Statue of Liberty battle, the first shot we get of Peter showing the aftermath of the spell is of him walking down the street to stop by the donut shop to finally tell MJ. He rehearses what to say from a handwritten note, “Hi, my name is Peter Parker. You don’t know me, but I… uh. Hi, my name is Peter Parker, and you don’t know me, but you–” He walks into the donut shop, he finds MJ laughing with a customer when she suddenly turns and waves in his direction. He’s taken aback at first until he realizes she’s waving at Ned who just walked in. He walks right back to Peter to sit at the counter. MJ is about to take Peter’s order when he says, “Hi, um, My name is Peter Parker. And I…” He loses the nerve at the last second and just says, “Would like a coffee, please.” As she serves him his coffee, he makes small talk by saying, “Um… are you excited for MIT??” At first MJ is confused but then realizes Peter just overheard her and Ned talking about college. “Oh. Uh, right, yeah. Uh… (then) Yeah, actually, I am excited which is weird ‘cause I don’t really get excited about things. I kind of expect disappointment–” Peter chimes in, “–’Cause then you’ll never actually be disappointed. Right??” She has a moment of deja vu but quickly recovers, “Uh, yeah. Right. It’s just, um– I dunno, it just kinda feels different this time for some reason.” Peter is just about to muster up the courage once again to tell her everything until she brushes her hair back and he sees a Band-Aid above her eye. The cut she got because of the final battle at the Statue of Liberty. He asks if she is okay once he notices the bandage, where she just replies, “It doesn’t hurt anymore… Is there anything else??”
“Forget Me Knots”
Then finally, the moment of truth. Peter pauses but just shakes his head and smiles back, “Uh… no.” He tucks his note back into his pocket. He takes his coffee, looks over at Ned, then back at MJ, and leaves. This is the most emotional part of No Way Home. This film wrapped up the “Homecoming” trilogy, and though the two previous Spider-Man titles (Homecoming and Far From Home) played on the word “home”. No Way Home hits differently making it the most relevant and shocking title due to the ending. Peter has officially lost everything, not only his parents, Uncle Ben, Tony Stark, and now Aunt May. But himself as well. He lost his identity, leaving everyone to forget not just that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, but who Peter Parker is completely. Including MJ, Ned, and Happy. Peter promised he’d come and find MJ and Ned and explain everything to them (again) to make it right. But he decides at the last minute not to say anything. Peter sees what MJ and Ned’s lives look like without him in it, without the secrets and the stress of Spider-Man… Instead of saying anything, Peter decides to stay out of their lives, to keep them safer, and to have a normal life. This is heartbreaking, after everything that has happened in the trilogy, for no one to remember who Peter Parker is but for Peter to have to go one remembering everything.
“When you help someone, you help everyone.”
On a winter day, Peter stands before May’s grave. He lays down flowers in front, the tombstone reads, “When you help someone, you help everyone.” Happy then appears, he asks how Peter knew her. “Through Spider-Man.” Happy then tells Peter, “I lost a good friend a while back.” Which he is referring to Tony, which is just a knife through the heart. He continues, “Felt like this. (then) It hurts ‘cause they’re gone. And then it hurts all over again because you remember what they stood for, and you wonder, ‘Is all that gone too??’” Peter goes, “No, it’s not gone. Everyone that she helped… they’ll keep it going.”
There Is No Way Home…
From Homecoming to Far From Home, Peter went from being a young Avenger to having the responsibility of a hero, to now finding out the true cost he must pay being Spider-Man. No Way Home was not just about Peter dealing with the fame of his double life but the heroic and selfless decisions he has to face which results in him not being able to go “home”. Peter carries a box into his studio apartment. He turns on the light, and takes it in. His new home is a fresh start. He opens a box that has a GED test manual, this just further shows the impact the spell has on Peter’s life. He did not only sacrifice his relationships but his atypical life. Since no one remembers Peter, there is no record of him attending high school. Which means this brilliant, science prodigy, had to give up his education.
We Are Happy To Serve You
In Peter’s new apartment, he places the Star Wars Emperor Palpatine LEGO on his desk. This has a much deeper meaning, of course for fans, since it’s the same LEGO minifigure from the LEGO Death Star Ned brings to school back in Spider-Man: Homecoming. They built and rebuilt this set many times together. This pulled fans’ heartstrings knowing Peter kept it to remember Ned, who sadly doesn’t remember Peter. Peter looks out his window, as snow falls in New York. He turns to his Spider-Man mask that lays on his bed as he follows a police precinct on his phone. Before the final swing, the camera angles in on the desk which lies a sewing machine with scraps of red and shiny blue fabric. Next to it is the coffee cup MJ gave him, which reads, “We are happy to serve you.” But the saddest part has to be the LEGO of the Emperor sitting directly next to it.
The Final Swing
Peter truly has to make it on his own, to start from scratch. The road to becoming the one and only Spider-Man did not go without any sacrifices, this left him with no allies but no one at all. Next Spider-Man slides up the window and leaps out into the snow. He flips and rolls across snowy rooftops in his new, homemade suit. He soars over the Rockefeller Christmas tree with this new sense of freedom. He doesn’t have to live two lives anymore. There is no more Peter Parker but Spider-Man lives on… The ending was quite brutal having Peter all alone. The last shot of the film shows Peter all suited up in a brand new Spider-Man costume made and sewn by himself with a comic-accurate design. Spider-Man swinging through the snow and rain symbolizes change and rebirth. His suit is symbolic along with the snow as Peter is different now and Spider-Man will never be the same from here on out.
